This. A band that wants to tour, record, and get a deal should be past tabs.. IMO.

They apparently were not even willing to do the minimum
work to get you up to speed. A chart, a cd, mp3's, a tempo,
something. Sounds like it was just too hard for them to deal
you in. Move on, bro. You asked for everything that was
needed to do the job and they failed to deliver.
It appears that they are going nowhere anyway. A band who is passionate about its music, who is also breaking in a new player, would likely behave in a more obsessive and/or profesional manner about the music as well as other things. And no gigs since you came on board? Puh-leeze. Why did YOU stay around?
They are idiots if they sincerely expected you to magically know how to play all of those songs under the circumstances you described. They are jackasses if they used that as an excuse and were really lying about why they fired you.
Couldn't have said it better myself. I'm all for everybody woodshedding parts on their own time but a truly professional band would not be bagging every 2nd or 3rd rehearsal... if anything they would be rehearsing more intensively to get the new member up to speed. At some point before the real gigs, you have to play the songs together as a full band, repeatedly. You more than met them halfway, and they weren't up to it. They pretty much set you up to fail and you're better off without them.
And now, sweet justice, they have to start all over again with a new guy. They tried to shortcut the process and now it's costing them more downtime than if they would have just done it right the first time.
Actually, the last time someone started to tell me what notes to play, my response was, "Are you paying me? Once you start paying me, then you can pick the notes. Until them, I pick 'em!"

+another 1. They had big dreams and no idea of how to get there. They were hoping you would magically transform them into a real band, which they obviously aren't right now. No one can be expected to learn an unknown song without a recording.
Maybe I missed this info: were they original songs? If not, what prevented YOU from downloading the recordings from iTunes, Rhapsody, Amazon, or wherever?

I bet they didn't know all 12 songs either. Be glad that they cancelled so many practices because you'll never get the time back. I've been in bands where I get charts and we go over 20 or so songs in a practice and are later able to play them convincingly well. It's because everyone has a basic understanding of how to make music. Sounds like these guys don't know how to communicate musically or otherwise. Call it fired or call a blessing.

+1. Tabs are just a shortcut to be used when learning by ear, worthless by themselves. They did you a favor by not wasting even MORE of your time.
Send them a disassembled car motor and thell them to put it together by the end of the week and it better run like new or they will be fired....
And there is the biggest problem with tabs. Tabs will only show where the notes are, like Jimmy M said, but they will never show you tempo or rhythm changes or beats. That's why notation is widely used and a seasoned music reader can put some sheet music in front of him/her and play along while with tabs you'll always rely on either a recording or a live rehearsal. Tabs are great if you already know how a song goes but want to learn different parts but being able to sight read is better. With death metal there are all kinds of rhythm changes and weird time signatures so if they were to expect you to learn 12 songs with 3 two hour practices per month for 3 months, and that's only 9-12 practices total, they're ********. Sounds to me like the guys are totally clueless to how music is created and played by different musicians. If you can't communicate with new band mates then don't put out an ad for new ones.:scowl:
