Joe Osborn used a pick on all of the sessions he has done, Simon and Garfunkel, 5th Dimension, etc. Same with Carol Kaye.
But Chris Squire did it first.

Anyway, Chris Squire, of course, plus Steve Swallow, plus someone mentioned Colin Moulding and that name drop was worth +1000. He mastered the sound of flatwounds and a pick on classic old basses like the Rick 4004. His bass sound literally sounds like someone saying the word "junk" over and over again. "Joonk, joonk, joonk." Sounds awesome.
Not a whole lot of people know this, but XTC had an alter-ego called The Dukes of Stratosphear. They were a kind of lark project where they used all this old archaic studio gear, like tape effects and Mellotrons and tube resonators, to try to capture the sounds of classic old 60's psychedelic records. If you can locate their compilation album (called "Chips From The Chocolate Fireball") it's a riot. The songs themselves are impossible to forget once you've heard them, and you can almost hear which songs they're trying to emulate on every track, like "oh, this one sounds like God Only Knows by the Beach Boys, this one sounds like Somebody To Love by Jefferson Airplane" which makes it a lot of fun. And the bass sounds really monstrous on every track. Highly recommended.
Yay!!!!! Man, I was gonna drop him in. Talk about bass playing and tone that jumps right outta the speakers.
What about Martin Dresden from that great Dutch band Focus, and this days Nick Oliveri, former bassist from Queens of the Stone Age, and Nick Oliveri and the Mondo Generator.
You can find that Dukes of Stratosphear disc on iTunes and on Amazon. Clips sound like cool stuff.
I always want to avoid thread like this, but how about Felix Pappalardi, Dennis Dunaway, Ray Shulman, Tom Evans and Mike Rutherford? And Greg Lake? None of whom have been mentioned yet.
