I saw Trip Wamsley's name mentioned earlier. He's a mad man with a pick. He's been working on it quite a bit. I've seen him run circles around the best of slappers with a pick. You know how it goes....you're at the NAMM show & EVERYONE is slapping. Trip started busting out all of that double-thumbing/ triple & quadruple thumbing......but with a pick & cleaner than....well......fill in the blank with the name of any bassist who's good at that stuff. Even better, though; all pyro-technics aside.....he plays WAY musical with a pick too. To take it even further, he does it on his Alembic 8 stringer like nobody else. He's a freak. What a fitting name he has......

I just found on youtube a video of Trip Wamsley, the one who Brado talks about, but the thing he does with his fingers is much more interesting to me. Here are 2 videos so you can compare.

Just kidding. Gene Simmons has always been one of my favorites, and he uses a pick exclusively, as do Lemmy, Justin Chancellor, and many other fantastic players. Geezer Butler uses a pick when the song calls for it (Iron Man, anyone?). I don't care how a guy plays his bass, I care how well he plays it.
Roger Manganeli from Less Than Jake, one of my favourite bassists. Listen to the album Losing Streak, it has some amazing bass playing.
It's about being dedicated to getting the right sound for the song/band/artist rather than trying to impose your one preferred sound/technique on everything you play on.
Surprised that Rex Brown hasn't been listed yet. I don't think it gets any better than him for a good solid metal with a pick sound.
Sean Yseult from White Zombie/Rockcity Morgue is a pretty solid player too. Never mentioned when you're thinking about "the best" but for what she can do with her tiny hands, I'm impressed. Plus she was my first major celebrity "crush" or whatever you call it now.
