Greatest Progressive Album ever

thats what I am using, that paradigm shift. I mean, progressive is really, reforming music, or taking something to the next level. see definitions below:

Well, that's the problem with labels -- and especially the "prog rock" label: "Prog Rock" ceased to have any connection to the literal semantic definition of "progressive" about a nanosecond after it became a recognized musical genre.

I'd offer that none of the bands commonly thought of as "prog rock" offered up a tenth of the "paradigm shift" (and hence, weren't nearly as progressive) as Claude Debussey, Igor Stravinsky, Arnold Schoenberg, Charles Ives, Krzysztof Penderecki...or Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman...

But that's not really the point. "Prog rock" is recognized as a particular genre of rock music with a litany of specific characteristics, "progressiveness" not necessarily being one of them.

None of the above is meant to be a value judgement, btw.

It's gotta be Dark Side of the Moon as an overall album. There are songs on Crack the Skye, Close to the Edge, Lateralus, etc that I love a lot more than the songs on Dark Side of the Moon, but if you're choosing albums nothing comes close to the Dark Side of the Moon experience.

Lateralus is 2nd.

Oh, sir, you are so wrong.

YouTube - The Mighty Boosh - Tusk
:p

Rush: A Farewell to kings, Caress of steel, Hemispheres and Signals just to name a few.
Von Hertzen Brothers: Approach, Stars aligned
Yes: Drama
Dream Theater: Awake
Pink Floyd: Animals
Symphony X: The Odyssey
Sininen Kaappi: Foliotracks

If you consider late Beatles as prog, I shall add Magical Mystery Tour, Abbey Road and Sgt. Pepper to my list as well.

Too much good prog out there :D

**Okay, my conclusion: A Farewell to Kings is my favorite prog album of all time**

What would you consider to be the greatest progressive album ever recorded? Why?

Mine would be "Close to the Edge" by Yes. 1972.

Agreed. Close To The Edge is at the pinnacle - conceptually, lyrically & musically. It is breathtakingly revelatory, transformative and deeply moving.

If there is such a thing as a progressive rock masterpiece, this would be it.

Far too many to name, so here's a list of my favorites:

Rush - Caress of Steel, 2112, A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, The Wall
Yes - Tales of Topographic Oceans, Relayer
Jethro Tull - Aqualung, thick As A Brick
The Moody Blues - their first 7 albums
Genesis - Everything before Duke

Hmmm - sooo many AWESOME prog albums...

1. Yes - Close to the Edge (the epitomy of prog)
2. ELP - Brain Salad Surgery (the excesses are wonderful)
3. U.K. - U.K. (dark, moody, fantastic)
4. Genesis - Wind and Wuthering
5. Renaissance - Scheherazade (their best album)
