guess he never sold it....

i guess this could be it, but probably not. but you would think if he were going to use a fake pic he would use this one because its much closer than the other one

if he would take the pickguard off we would know for sure by the knots in the wood, although the knot by the bridge pickup seems to be on both basses

Looks like very different grain patterns. Especially on the upper horn.
The ebay has some circular grain where the pic above is very straight grained.
Definitely different instruments.

Silly stories aside, it really is a nice bass when you look at it.

Out of curiosity, if a legit talkbass member was selling it in the classifieds...a vintage Fender jazz body with a newer warmoth neck and a BA bridge...what would be a fair price?

The replies to questions are worth the read alone, especially when he says that he had no idea that Jaco had died.

I love that.

...I have a bass that was given to me by one of the best bass players in the world, did my research to determine what to sell the bass for, but didn't realize that the alleged owner died 27 years ago....

Okie dokie.

I would guess under $1k.

I have a 1972 Jazz (exactly like Geddy's) that was repainted and has replaced electronics and pickups. Great bass but I highly doubt I would get $2k. And that is with a black bound and blocked original neck.

I say 12-1500 at best.

On a side note, I think that might be the carpet from the Big Lebowski movie.
I wonder how much that is worth?

In his defense Jaco WAS not a Living Legend at any time. He was relatively well known to other musicians, but the average person on the street did not know Jaco from Jack. I grew up in Florida and never heard of him until well after his death and I got deep into the bass playing lore. Either way this bass "body" is worth $1200 tops and that is just for the body- if it can be documented.

Yes, he certainly was a living legend. He may not have been recognizable by the average person on the street, but millions of people knew who he was and millions of people considered him to be the best bassist that ever lived. If he was not a living legend, no bassist ever has been.

Then when confronted on the bass in the picture being white:
"It seems that it was originally tobacco sunburts. The pic was sent to me by another well-wisher, attempting to aid me in the sell. And the pic is enhanced, the bass is not originally 'white', but modified for the black and white, sepia look of the picture."

Maybe he should take a look at the original "non-enhanced" photo and see how he interprets it as a sunburst finish:

Doesn't look like the same instrument to me.

To be fair, he doesn't say that (although it'd be hilarious if he did). I think you're probably referring to the part where he says he made the mods when Jaco was still alive, not anticipating that he'd die young and the bass would be worth something...

I'm certainly not saying I believe the guy, but I'm pretty sure that's his story, anyway...
