Guild Pilot bass club?

This seems to correlate with previous post but it's in PDF format. I thought my SB-602 (BE100152) Pickguard pilot (orig P pup config, fretless, maple FB, Nat ash finish) was an 83 until I checked this again. Turns out it's an 84! (That's ok, it and the OHSC were mint and it doesn't have "pilot" written on it, so I consider it early enough and rare). I loved it so much that a few mos later I grabbed an 84 reverse P pup fretted with rosewood FB, pointy headstock, SB-604. The guy who set it up for me said THAT's my favorite bass! Both are a joy to play and I'll not part with them when I thin the 11 count herd.

I picked up a 1983 Pickguard model Pilot on eBay a few months ago and it was pretty ugly. Someone had painted it olive green (really bad paint job) with a black custom pearl Pickguard.
I stripped the body to repaint black and got a new black Pickguard made. After stripped the body I found a very nice 1 piece ash body. I was impressed. I am now doing a dark black stain and clear lacquer finish. I wanted future owners to see the one piece body. Should turn out cool. I'll post pics later if interested. Not much Pilot interest on Talk Bass.

Are you sure it's ash and not poplar? I never heard of a Pilot with an ash body. (Although anything is possible with Guild!)

Gah, I can't join the club But I can comment, can't I?

Been semi-lusting after one of these for years. Funny thing is that I am generally way more drawn to big, curvey, round-bodied basses - think most of the Yamaha BBs, Ibanez BTBs, or my current/only bass, a Peavey T-40 - but I dunno; there is just something about these Guild Pilots that draws me...sigh...perhaps I'll luck into one in a pawn shop sometime...

Very, very rarely I see one pop up on the 'Bay, but they've been more than I have been willing to pay...hee hee, that rhymes...

EDIT: I should add that I'm kinda partial to maple fretboards these days, which is another reason I haven't pulled the trigger on a pilot, as they only seem to come with rosewood boards. We'll see though...might be willing to return to "the dark side" for one of these if the price is right...

EDIT 2: Just scrolled to the top of this page and saw a Pilot with not just a maple board, but FRETLESS...what the?!!? That must be a rare beast indeed...

Not sure, just assumed they would use ash. But in my experience it does look more like ash. My main point was the single piece, I don't see that much.

I hadn't had my Pilot out on a gig for a while, but I had a chance to play it at last night's gig. Man, what a great playing/sounding bass! I need to keep this in regular rotation!

it says a lot that you can say that about that bass with an mtd next to it...I've been looking around for a pilot lately...not sure why, just got the itch for one...I've always thought that they were a little bit of a better jazz bass...

I found a pilot in pieces.....I got neck and body only....going to resurrect...used to be midnight blue, now Homer Formby.....(look it up if you don't know who he is) LOLOLOL

Hello Pilot owners!
I have questions and hope all the Pilot owners here are still watching this thread.
I'm looking at (to maybe buy) a 1985 Pilot with a black body (no pickguard) that is sporting a nice looking maple fretboard.
This one was made with only the EMG P pickup and no J pickup, so I gather it is one of the 50 that were made of the SB603.
Headstock is the foot shape painted black and the Guild logo is lower case cursive lettering and the lettering has the g tail underlining the uild.
The white ink/paint that make the logo is not painted solid..it is "stripey".
Bridge is Shaller roller but does have Guild cast into it.
The tuners have Guild printed on them so obviously not Grovers.
Control knobs are black ano aluminum knurled with the two bands around them.
Everything looks stock in the pics, based on pics of all the Pilots I've seen here.
So, have any of you folks seen a Pilot with this "stripey" guild logo?
How common or uncommon is the maple fretboard on Pilot basses or this single pickup model?
Anyway, I'm curious if any of you folks own a 603 or if anybody has laid hands on one.
I can't find a pic of a bass like this when I Google Pilot basses.
If anybody has answers or comments I would very much appreciate any and all feedback.

A pretty uncommon bass and not super high in value. Maple board is unique but does not affect value. Let us know when you get it!
