Setting the EMG pre controls to center is theoretically flat, so it shouldn't change the sound of anything.
I've only ever used the EMG P, J, and DC pickups. I'm not familiar with the newer lines they've introduced over the years.

My opinion is that if you want your DeArmond to be a Pilot, then active EMG P+J is the way to go.

When Hartke came out with their XL4 and XK4 basses (yes they once made basses - they had aircraft aluminum core necks), I bought an XK4. Shortly afterward that, Larry Hartke ran a promotional where he advertised his cell phone number and guaranteed that he would answer and not one of his employees. I called. He answered. We talked. I told him I had an XK4 and he said, “Cool. Now all you have to do is add the Bartolini Preamp and black hardware and you’ve got an XL.
I added the preamp. I loved the difference.

Ive got a Pilot. They’re actually pretty great. If I remember correctly, that’s a P/J with Bartolini pups and pre. That should be a nice sounding bass.

I would like one with a rosewood fretboard as my second.
There is a Pilot on Guitar Center website that has an all maple neck and a body color that is rare.
It's very dirty, frets are green, and has a "thumb rest spot" that has no paint anymore, but overall the bass looks pretty good.
