That sucks. A 60 by 20 by 8 inch, 30ish pound box costs at most $60 through FedEx if I'm shipping all the way to the west coast. Methinks you're getting screwed somewhere along the way.
Boxes are plentiful and free from guitar center, though I generally always have one or two from gc used bass purchases.
GC would be a 3 hour round trip for me.
I only have one box now that "might" fit a bass in it's case.
All the ones I've received were crap. Some were patchwork, pieced together with tape.

Yes, everything costs more here, and takes an extra day. I think it has to do with proximity to the terminal (Denver).
The bass I got this week was rattling around in a single-walled box, not sealed on the ends, with most of one side ripped open. Only one dent by the strap button, and it seems straight, a testament to Ibanez construction.
But you can ship to California for less than I would pay to ship to NY from Colorado.
I got a Warlock bass delivered & the box had a fork lift hole in it. It wasn't in a case either, so I guess I was just lucky it wasn't damaged.
When I ship a bass I always end up paying 'dimensional weight' because of the length. That's what kicks the cost up so high. And yes, it's usually $60-80.
I prefer the eight dimension myself...
Dimensional weight sounds like some astrophysicist level stuff to me...
That's what UPS calls it. Its actual weight may 20lbs but its dimensional weight is 44lbs. And guess which one you pay for.
FedEx and UPS both use dimensional weight, USPS does not but they have a size limit which depending on the service and where it's going is either the limit or allows an overage charge when you exceed it...which may be based on dimensional weight
Fedex seems to go MOSTLY by size. I ship a lot of stuff through them at work. Large packages (bass box size for sure) get a dimensional weight of 80 lbs no matter what. But an inch deeper on packages can make a VERY large difference in price. I've reboxed on a number of occasions because a narrower box saved me $30.
Reverb sales uline boxes for cheap. I have never bought a box but I am thinking about buying a few of theres to have some around I think there $5-10
