FWIW, the Ovation Ultras were decent basses that were well made, played great, and sounded good. I had one with a Kahler trem, which was stock and interesting to say the least.
But I'd say it was easily built as well as some MIJ Fenders of the time. The looks were "take it or leave it", but definitely not as butt ugly as what Ovation mostly made at the time.
$300 is not a super steal, but a decent price. The pickups may have been changed out (and the J pickup added, actually), but for $300 with a case, it's a decent bass.
