FWIW, the Ovation Ultras were decent basses that were well made, played great, and sounded good. I had one with a Kahler trem, which was stock and interesting to say the least.
But I'd say it was easily built as well as some MIJ Fenders of the time. The looks were "take it or leave it", but definitely not as butt ugly as what Ovation mostly made at the time.

$300 is not a super steal, but a decent price. The pickups may have been changed out (and the J pickup added, actually), but for $300 with a case, it's a decent bass.

I don't know what kind of warranty you're getting with a new Fender that you wouldn't get with this, but here's an apparently brand new jazz for $350 less than a new new one.

Ok..so there's 2 different ones, one active (older) and the current passive which has a BA and noiseless J..but not the magical unicorn tone thing..(it probably works great)..I think these were blown out by GC a while back?

Not really sure, I'm not even much of a Fender guy but I've played one of these a couple times and if I didn't already have this P/J slot filled I'd buy it.

I posted that earlier. 44-14 (and 55-14) are USA made, they were introduced last year (hence the -14) as their "standard" series (which they have now expanded). Street is about $2600.
