I respect you for standing up to them, all I am saying is there was possibly a less risky option that you could have taken.:)

And a valid argument... although you don't really know if the aggressor wants any witnesses left alive, or if he wants to rape a woman while he burglarizes her house, etc. If someone breaks into my house I assume they are there to harm me and I act accordingly. Legally and morally, I cannot shoot someone for breaking into my house, but I can keep them in my sights and tell them to get on the ground. If I see a weapon or any draw for a weapon, I'm not taking chances anymore. It has then become a threat on my life.

If I lived in Texas, I could use deadly force to prevent someone from escaping from a forcible felony such as burglary or rape. Shooting someone in the back as they're running away with your TV is legal there:) I'd imagine that's why they have pretty low crime rates.

How many times have you been in this situation?

I haven't been in that situation, but my house has been burglarized twice when I wasn't home. I haven't been in a serious car accident but I wear my seat belt anyway too.

EDIT - Numerous studies have shown that citizens use firearms to prevent or stop crimes at least 1.5 million times every year. A great majority of those instances involve no shots fired, but just brandishing the firearm causes the assailant to flee. Many go unreported.

Im not telling you you aint doing it right, protecting you, your family and your belongings is a high priority like to any of us.

But what i know from this situations is that once you are in, things start happening too fast, because of the adrenalin your body is providing you to make your reactions quicker, and once you pull out the gun you have to think (whats behind my target and things like that) and it is hard to be ready to think in this kind of situations.

Many ppl are not mentally prepared to endure this, some others dont understand that once you yield the gun its time to be ready to kill but the worst of all are those who realize it once the have pulled out their gun and they are not ready to kill, hesitation is not your friend.

It takes a lot more than just plain training, caring and understanding the gun itself for using it properly to defend yourself and your relatives.

Thats all my gripe, not trolling.

I value your opinion and your observations and agree with pretty much everything you have said here... training, mental preparation, familiarity with the firearm, etc. all have a part to play in the scenario. We all do the best that we can and I hope I never need the training and tools I have prepared myself with :)

Aint there DIY silencers?

Yes, BUT it's a Federal offense. Most DIY stuff isn't particularly good, even if they "work" it's rarely for more than one shot, definitely at the cost of accuracy. You also need to use subsonic ammo, which depending on the round, might mean it takes a few more to get the job done and you lose range+penetration.

Any time you attach something to the end of the barrel, you run the risk of the gun blowing up in your face, too.............

I forgot to mention, I keep hollowpoints in my gun to reduce the risk of over penetration... Doesn't help if you miss, but they're much less likely to go through multiple walls or go through the intruder and out the other side.

I'm so glad we got a gun thread for this long without it caving in with politics! Anyone here interested in long range shooting? I know I'll never be able to afford a Barrett or PSG-1, but holy cow, I love the sheer skill and mental focus it takes to hit a target from 600+ yards!

I would be if I had a scope... just have irons on my AR15. I find it hard to group at 100yds. Pretty good at 50 yds though.

"A hollow point, also called a hollow tip, is a bullet that has a pit or hollowed out shape in its tip, generally intended to cause the bullet to expand upon entering a target in order to decrease penetration and disrupt more tissue as it travels through the target."

From Wiki.....

I get the feeling that you are taking no chances and don't believe in minimum force necessary.....:)

Nope.

Why would I? :)

I don't need the metal jacketed rounds penetrating walls and going into the neighbor's house or into other rooms of my own. Plus JHP's are more likely to stop the threat quicker.

Lethal force means lethal force...

I went through the whole NRA program in my younger days. I would love to do more long range shooting but just don't have the time. I have a 700 in .308. One of these days I'll get something from US Optics to go on top of it!!

I have allways wondered how much noise reduction a handgun gets from a silencer?
I have never shot with a silencer so my only experience with it is hollywood movies and i know the "silentness" they get isnt the real deal.

Hollywood certainly makes them like you're invisible. There are several things that make noise when you shoot. The first is the obvious combustion of the gunpowder. The second is the bullet breaking the sound barrier. The third is the bullet impact. The fourth and 5th are the cycling of the weapon (unless bolt action) and ejection of shell casing.

I once shot a 9mm CAR15 in a local range with a suppressor. The gun was whisper quiet, but it was hard to tell how quiet it really was because the muzzle blast was greatly overshadowed by the sound of the bullet impacting the wall.

So, I guess to answer your question, the sound might not alert the local authorities, but it doesn't exactly make you an invisible warrior.

+1

Once a conflict has met the requirements for lethal force, I'm not going to try to apply a force continuum. If you threaten my life or the life of my family, I will do everything in my power to stop you. The difference is that I won't bother with fists, a baseball bat (which I understand is the current muggers' weapon of choice in the UK as of late), or any other object that requires me to endanger myself more than necessary.

I don't know what my mental state would be if I ever had to take a life, and I pray (and I literally mean pray) that I will never have to find out...but if it comes down to an attacker's life or my wife's life, I don't have to spend a single moment debating the choice.

The carry / don't carry decision requires some very serious soul-searching. I went through that years ago when I interviewed for law enforcement positions, and had to answer the question, "Could you take a human life?" in front of a panel of police officers and a psychologist. After some more soul-searching, I ended up turning down the opportunity to go into that field, but not for that reason.

Just to bring this out of the deep dark serious topic...

Someone mentioned long-range shooting...I got to try a Barrett M82 a few months ago. WHOA! That was flat out scary (in a good way)...the power behind those rounds is mind-boggling.

I can tell you that proper ammo and a quality sound suppressor do wonders at making a weapon very quiet. Here is a video of a friend of mine at one of our matches. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bBsodpPsDY At the 2:30 mark you will see him shooting a suppressed AR-15 and no it is not a .22lr or pistol caliber carbine. This was a full on .223/5.56mm!
