Due respect, there's no need to jump into the thread if you are against the topic (same reason I'm not going to step into the anti-gun thread). I've got very strong opinions on your gun laws across the pond, but they are just that...opinions. Personally, I prefer the Swiss mindset when it comes to firearms.
We're all bassists, those of us in this thread just have an additional common interest.

I've never shot a sub-compact 1911 in .45 cal. Is it brutal?
I love my Colt 10mm 1911 more than my buddies Springfield .45 1911.
To me it is more comfortable to shoot. Not sure what the grain difference is between the 10mm and .45 rounds but it seems to be enough to make a difference, to me at least.

I agree and I'm definately a gun guy.
They are a really cool setup. If you go for one just make sure you are using it with the M3/ML3 with the 2moa dot as the dot gets magnified as well.
I have had a Star Firestar .45 and currently have a Para P13 .45 (Commander size) and neither one was/is punishing to shoot.
As for the gun club, I guess you could count me in. (looks at avatar and sig line)
I wouldn't say they are brutal. The 45acp round isn't a very high case pressure round. I find a Glock in .357 Sig, much more snappy and unpleasant to shoot even in a full size model. Full power 10mm ammo also packs a good bit of snap and recoil. The thing is.......if you shoot often you get used to it. Normally any typical carry gun ammo isn't going to "hurt" you. If recoil is bothersome, lighter ammo is usually available. If recoil is that bad, it's not a good defense gun. There's more ammo variations available in 45acp than any other round including some that are advertised as "Low Recoil"

A bigger concern for most is how you carry a 1911 or single action exposed hammer designed gun. Cocked and locked often worries people. That's another argument in itself
For my needs, method of carrry, climate and all other considerations, I prefer a double action, firing pin gun. On the range I like a hammer fired single action Hey, I've wondered this for a while, the original Mosin-Nagants used the 7.62x54 mm rounds, while later on, rifles like the HK PSG-1 use the 7.62x51 mm rounds. Plus hundreds of others use the 51 mm length, but you never really see the 54's any more. Any rifles out there still use the 7.62x54 mm rounds?

I own shotguns, rifles and pistols.
From what I understand, the maufacturers moved away from the longer round just to save space in their designs. I think there was even a 59mm round, I could be mistaken.
I am not necessarily against the topic, just wondering if someone could explain the American gun obsession.

I wouldn't call it an obsession, but certainly some folks are...
I don't know if I can explain it. I'm certainly not what most Europeans would thing of as a "gun nut"; I'm white-collar, middle-class, live in a suburb of a major metro area in the upper midwest, fiercely independent in my politics, etc., etc.
I enjoy shooting. It's a challenge, it's fun. I try to leave politics out of it in public, but I do have my strong opinions about the right to keep and bear arms. My college education was political science with a constitutional law emphasis, so you could say I've done some research on the topic.

One thing I will say to our international brethren...I think sometimes we give the impression that many of us walk around like it's the "Old West". Not so. You're not all that much more likely to see a gun on the belt of a civilian here than you are in the UK (with the notable exception of police officers).
Even those of us who carry regularly don't necessarily carry openly, and most states don't allow the open carry of firearms even with a permit. If you met me, you would not know. Even my wife can't usually tell. I'm that discreet on purpose. I know they make some people uncomfortable, and I'm understanding about that.
Part of it may be the background of this country. Not to sugarcoat or romanticize our history, but our nation was founded by a bunch of people who were intent on preserving individual rights, for better or for worse. There are arguments to be made on both sides of that fence, but when the nation has existed since day one on that premise, there will be a mindset that one of the rights to be protected is the right to defend oneself.
Guns don't define my life (heck, basses define my life far more than firearms do). They are just another part of it. To me, they are tools. Fun tools to some of us (albeit ones that must be treated with respect), but tools. I'm betting that some of our more rural TB'ers will feel even more strongly about that...

Another thing that I forgot in my previous post......Modern rifling and bullet designs have done away with the need for 2 inch long bullets
in order for them to fly straight. Some still exist and there are arguements to justify them but if you look at what modern snipers and hunters are using, it doesn't look much like that old ammo.

I often have visitors from Europe visit my shop. Everyone that comes wants to go to the range. I've NEVER had ANYONE go shooting, including my customers wives that didn't have a great time. Everyone that comes back for a return visit wants to do it again with more enthusiasm than the first time. You need to spend a day shooting to understand.
Carrying a gun for protection is another aspect of it. Not everyone that enjoys shooting carries for personal protection but many do. No one ever wants to have to USE a gun to defend themselves, I sure dont. But.....I'd rather have the gun and not need it than............

It's hard for me to understand - I expect it's fun and I would maybe like to have a go at clay pigeon shooting / shooting rabbits or something.
I appreciate it is written in to the US constitution - but why someone living in the city would want a collection of handguns just strikes me personally as a little strange from where I am sitting...
