I wouldn't say they are brutal. The 45acp round isn't a very high case pressure round. I find a Glock in .357 Sig, much more snappy and unpleasant to shoot even in a full size model. Full power 10mm ammo also packs a good bit of snap and recoil. The thing is.......if you shoot often you get used to it. Normally any typical carry gun ammo isn't going to "hurt" you. If recoil is bothersome, lighter ammo is usually available. If recoil is that bad, it's not a good defense gun. There's more ammo variations available in 45acp than any other round including some that are advertised as "Low Recoil"

I couldn't agree more, I also found the 40 S & W had more snap then a std. load .45. The "hot-fast" rounds seem to have a little more snap to them

FL, As far as holding up a holster, have you tried a Wilderness Tactical belt? They REALLY work.

Since we are talking about having fun with legally owned firearms and posting vids now, well....

Here is a vid of me getting to shoot my buddy Dave's HK MP5. It was my first time getting to fire a real full-auto HK and has driven me to look into getting one of my own. BTW, it is fully legal. It is a registered Class III firearm.

I'm looking to purchase my first firearm, hopefully a pistol of some kind, to learn how to shoot and be able to protect myself. There's been a string of small robberies around the general area that I live, and that has pushed me over the edge (I had been considering a gun for a while, this is just another catalyst). The only gun I've ever held in my hand is my stepfather's Glock (I think it's a model 22 or 23, I can't remember). It was pretty comfortable in the hand, but I never had the opportunity to fire it. I'm looking for something comfortable, reliable, safe (when pointed somewhere away from me, obviously), reasonably inexpensive (the Glock is in the $500-600 range, so not much more than that), but not cheaply made. The Glock seems to be an all around favorite, but I thought I would get more opinions before looking like a total dunce at the gun shop. Cheers.

Have you decided on a caliber yet? We don't want to get that debate started here because that will open up a whole can of worms!!

I bought a Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm for my first firearm, it's a polymer frame pistol like the Glock. Got it new for $525 with 5 magazines, holster, and case. I like it a lot, it felt much better in my hand than the Glock or the Springfield XD did. It's an extremely accurate and reliable pistol.

I figured choosing 9mm rather than .40 or .45 would enable me to practice more (ammo is about 60% the price of either of the others). Also, I like the lower recoil that enables faster follow-up shots, and the 17rd magazine capacity. Mine stays loaded with Gold Dot hollowpoints and a Streamlight TLR-2 light and laser for things that go bump in the night.

EDIT: I see you're in FL, are you looking for a firearm that is easily concealable as well?

Glocks are great firearms if the grip angle works for you. A lot of people, like me, they just don't fit well.My recommendation would be to start with a 9mm handgun. The recoil is almost nonexistant and it is more affordable to shoot than a .40sw or .45acp. They also tend to have a larger mag capacity than their larger calibered brethren.

I would advise checking out the following brands in 9mm...

Glock
Springfield XD
Taurus (I know some don't like them but they have always proven reliable for me)
Walther
CZ
Kahr

There are also plenty more quality yet affordable choices out there. I'm sure someone will bring up something I haven't thought of. Whatever you do, stay away from S&W Sigma pistols. They are cheap for a reason. The slides are made from powdered metal that just doesn't hold up.

Try to locate a gun shop in your area that has rentals and try out as many as you can afford to before making your purchase. Don't just settle on what some saleman tells you is the best for you as only you can answer that question.

I highly recommend taking a class with OPS in Sebring.

Don't worry about looking like a "total dunce". A good reputable gun shop will help you decide, answer your questions and give you some options.

While Glocks are certainly good guns, they're not for everybody. I'm a 1911 guy and the Glocks just don't feel right for me. Before you get your heart set on one, handle a few other types and brands of guns and shoot some, if possible. You'll quickly find out what feels good to you and points well.
If you can, take someone who knows guns with you to do some window shopping.

While Glocks are certainly good guns, they're not for everybody.

I have a Glock and a Baretta Vertec and I'm much more accurate with the Vertec....by lot. My main gripes with the Glock is that the trigger is kinda heavy and the slide is pretty massive. I prefer automatics with some form of hammer, which allows me to pull it back by choice to give myself a pretty light trigger. When the slide of a Glock cycles, it's not a small event. It's a lot of metal moving back and forth.

I've always been a Glock guy since the get go. I find them very reliable and actually prefer the absence of typical safety devices. I find them easy to shoot and are reasonably accurate out of the box as well as having numerous upgrade options. I've noticed the grips ( for me) cause me to align the gun oddly when gripped hard. My Sig P-220 Elite, on the other hand, is very natural feeling when drawn into a firing position. It's also about twice as much as a glock.

That being said, I can't recommend a revolver any higher. A nice .357 can shoot a variety of loads, is very easy to maintain and will go bang every time you pull the trigger.

I just worked out a trade with one of my customers. He's getting a refurbed custom knife. I'm getting a BRAND new, unfired H&K P7 M13 Pics in a few days, it's on the way to my FFL bud. My wife has the single stack version, we'll be like bookends I'm probably going to send it for a coating before I fire it.

Hey guys, I just got a new gun. A Sig P250 in 9mm.

I was originally going to get a Springfield XD(m) but chose this instead. I love it, its double action only but has a smooth trigger. I'll be getting the parts so that I can convert it to a .45 ACP and have both calibers!

So I went down to a well-respected gun store in town, and had them "sell" me a gun. I ended up handling just about every pistol in 9mm, .40, and even a couple in .45. About 30 or so in total. The gun that was the most comfortable in hand and looking down was a S&W M&P .40, so that's what I ended up getting. Next weekend will be training and taking it to the range (and my very first time shooting a gun......).

Nice gun!! Congrats!!! The SHOT Show (Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade) is in Orlando in January. You should ask the gun store for a pass. It's an amazing show, every single gun manufacturer will be there plus everything else that is business related.
