Double Bass Gut Strings: Are They Worth It To Try? (part I)

The thing I really liked about the Animas was the controllable amount of growl available... it was there when I wanted it, but it wasn't strident, and it never overshadowed the basic organic complexity of the sound.

I played Garbos on another bass, and they were actually my "entry drug" to Animas. I just preferred the Animas for my needs.

This may be a stupid question but Eoxa are the first gut core I tried and I was wondering if the Gamut wound gut are the same kind of string..

I'm not sure. I've never played Eudoxas and don't know much about them. Aren't they similar to Garbos? I'm pretty sure Garbos are gut core strings but I don't consider them gut strings.

The Gamut A and E are actually a gut G and D with a spiral wrap of silver or copper around it. They feel like EB round wound strings (and it took my calluses a while to get used them. If you were patient enough to peel off the wrap (and I've known folks to do just that), you'd have perfectly serviceable D and G strings.

I don't consider Garbos gut but I think they complement my real gut strings nicely though.

What are the differences if I may ask? Animas are probably my next purchase.

Eudoxa E and A are dead thunk strings in my book. Gamut wound guts were far more usable to me. I need a ballad whole note on the bottom or I get annoyed. The Anima is a great string and I always thought they'd go well with gut but never got around to trying them. One of the best E strings I've played. Up there with Spiro E's for me.

Thanks. Hmm. The Garbos are pretty live on my '28. I don't know if I want too much more zing than that. I'm still going to give them a try but Garbos might be the right string for this bass.

Does anyone know how long Garbos usually last?

It's not really a "zing" with the Animas. They sustain very nicely, but not in the same way as a Spiro. There's more fundamental, and a lot of "grain", color, and character. They're pretty wonderful. They also seem to last a good long time, as Ed Fuqua can tell you.

I haven't put in enough time on Garbos to help you much.

Thanks. I think I'd like to try new ones though. See how they break in etc. They aren't that expensive (The E is less than a Gamut G!) that I'm afraid to plunk down the cash. I'm still mulling over the Carlos Chordas but that's a $400 investment which is starting to get into real money and I'm quite happy with the Gamuts. Why mess with it if it's working? Right? (but what if they're better...?) I'm so confused...

I just have a feeling that the Animas on the bottom and the Gamuts up top would really be smokin'. Seems like the tension would be nice.... just right.

Plus, the arco on the lower Animas is not bad. I mainly had trouble with the higher strings. The Gamuts, OTOH, are great arco strings for me.

Man Am I enjoying this thread lately as a lurker :D ..... First there was "Should I try guts and then what about Gamut guts ?" .... Then there was "Should I try Velvet Animas?". I love them both .... G/D Gamut (pistoys) .... A/E Animas .... on my Epiphone and won't be changing them out for a loooonnnnggg-friggin'-time (unless they bust).

I hope everyone finds their String Nirvana .... I found mine .... At least on the Epi. I'm ditching the Gamuts and Garbo on the Kay and going for Innov Honeys ... I'll let you know if that works-out or if I end-back-up with Gamut guts and Velvets on both basses.

Soooo Marcus .... I read that you played a successful extraneous-noise gig with your gut-equipped LaScala and had good things to report about the Fundamental of guts ..... Congrats on that .... That has been my experience also .... With or without my amp.

But what I really want to know is .... Are there really Four Seasons on Maui ?? :p ;) .... The snow will be flyin'-soon I suppose. Better buy a snowblower soon Pal.

PIZZ-OFF Marcus :D ..... Enjoy Them Lame-Ass 4-Seasons in Maui .... Come to Montana in January if you ever-want to get Refreshed and have your snot freeze as it drools-down your upper-lip and hangs from your moustache .... The local-chicks will dig-it .... Especially if you also know how to play An UpRight :p !
