Guys - Who Hates Football?

yup. seen some of those vintage super stockers, pretty cool stuff. Still love me some nitro, the nostalgia thing is way more entertaining than the big show stuff, havent been to a NHRA race in about 5 years and have no plans of attending another, over priced and underwhelming.

Our local track was just sold and there's already rumors flying that they may try to bring a national event back this way. It's an IHRA track and the last event here was 2002. I ran in it several years and even racked up a semi final finish in my class in 1999. Each year as a competitor I managed to weasel my way up to the starting line for the nitro classes...... f'in unreal is the best way to describe that.

At least back then IHRA cared about the grass roots racer, unlike the NHRA. Hopefully they stayed the same.

The IHRA is making a comeback so we will see what kind of job they will do, Nostalgia funny car is one of there featured classes. They are having a 16 car field at Cordova, Ill. this year,may have to make the trip down for that one.

We Have been making the California Hot Rod Reunion in Bakersfield Ca. the last bunch of years, great show

The thing about sports is that they are part of our society. Having no knowledge of them is not a noble or virtuous thing - it's simply a choice, and it excludes you from being able to participate in that part of interaction.

If it doesn't interest you, that's fine. However, it's simply a choice to eliminate that part of social context and interaction from your world.

I guess one of the things that irritates me about stick and ball type sports is how they sponge off the taxpayers to fund their stadiums and other such things, but yet they are able to pay the players multi millions of dollars. As ar as I'm concerned if I have to fund your team I shouldn't have to pay for tickets to see you play. I'm also tired of hearing players piss and moan that they want a larger salary.

Let's hope so with the IHRA.

I think I was in Cordova back in the mid to late 90's for the bracket finals..... I've been to so many tracks it's hard to keep them all straight.

I agree with this part. Beer+cheese is perfection, especially if there are a few spicy things like wings.

Personally, I just don't see the connection to sports that people don't play or haven't played. I'm a cyclist and still race. I'll sit on the edge of the seat while watching a good race, but don't feel any connection whatsoever with football. If someone didn't ever sit on a road bike and gun it, I'd understand 100% if they thought watching races was boring as hell.

I haven't watched a single sports game since Bulls vs Lakers in the 90's. Televised sports just don't do it for me. I used to wonder in amazement at how people could get that riled up over a simple game until I realized many of those same people wondered why I'd get so riled up about music. I'm surrounded by VERY sports oriented people at work and I am indeed the outcast. It's kind of become a running joke where they ask if I'd heard blah blah got signed to blah blah. Thing is, I'm not even half as excited about music as some of these guys are about their teams. If I followed the bands I like the same way some of these guys follow the Yankees or Knicks, I'd probably be called a creepy groupie.

I don't really hate football, to be honest it's my favourite sport to play, but with that said, I don't play it often, and never followed sports too much. I never really got it that much, with that said though, I've thought about getting into it just for the social aspect - talking stats with more "normal" dudes, hanging out and watching "the game", but it's never tempted me enough to go through with it.

+1,000,000,000. Plus then these guys are given "hero" status when they are just doing a job based on being strong or fast, and taking orders well. So every good warehouse worker or UPS driver should have kids buying their trading cards and jerseys too.

To be fair, professional footbal players are being paid a lot of money to participate in a career that averages less than 4 years (usually ended by a sudden debilitating injury), and for those players lucky enough to retire after a full career, are almost guaranteed to suffer for the rest of their lives from serious and permanent damage to their bodies.

And to be fair and balanced, this could also be said to apply to warehouse and other factory workers, as you describe.
