halftime

Yeah, I enjoyed Gaga's performance. I don't see anything so sacred about any piece of music, that it can't be embellished or toyed with. Even sometimes with classical music - a lot of baroque music was meant to have some improvisation in it (bass lines for example). Or, Switched On Bach would be another example, where liberties were taken, successfully, in the presentation of the music. Hendrix' version of The Star Spangled banner is a classic example of innovative embellishment, so I appreciate folks mentioning that. And the point about Gaga having to "stretch" the song a bit for the flyover at the end is very well taken, and well done by Lady G.

Bruno Mars is da sh*t! The rest of the halftime show ... eh, okaaaay ...

Am I the only one who sees the irony in people getting upset about artists applying a little bit of 'Artistic Freedom' to the Nation Anthem of the United States? Land of The Free??

A little artistic freedom is good. Anyone who has stood at attention while the same crackly old recordings of the so-called "straight" version were played at military sponsored events (like at the base movie theater) probably welcomes a bit of well-intentioned variety in a live performance.

I didn't care for her drawn out Anthem either, but every single comment I read about it was overwhelmingly positive. I think you and I are the only two negatives.

I didn't like it either. I found her voice to be pitchy, it was drawn out too long and I don't like when people try to sing it like a soul song.

I don't usually watch the SB. I am a fan of the traditional ground game (you know, the foundation and rhythm of the game) which is deemphasized today.

I watched this year in pieces at three parties I attended. Game was pretty dull, read less like a defensive domination than an offense that could not find its rhythm..

Funny thing, though. I liked the halftime show. I expected a big, showy event, and they delivered. It was a good time. I don't take it too seriously.

The Superbowl is funny, from an old-world perspective.

You want this majestic event. The national anthem has to be sung better than it's ever been sung, the commercials have to be more inventive than last year, the half-time show has to be spectacular although not necessarily interesting beyond being interesting to look at. You'd get really bored of this sort of attempted-pomp if you lived in Europe - it's all over the place, all the time. Only we don't get to pick the flavour-of-the-month pop people to present it - it's always the same people. Here in the UK it's the dusty old German royal family we've ended up with. Kate Middleton is pretty but before she turned up it was really, REALLY dull.

But you've got a football game, ultimately. And usually a disappointingly one-sided football game at that. Trying to glam it up with Chris Martin seems like a fool's errand.

I thought she took less liberties with it than most do. For my money, the best renditions I've ever heard are:

1. Whitney Houston
2. Dixie Chicks (very close to a tie for 1st)
3. Lada Gaga last night

Some people make that thing sound stale and labored. Gaga sang it like she really was proud to be an American. I thought it was fantastic!

Huey Lewis and the News does an amazing version - based on the Marine Band arrangement.

I thought the halftime show was one of the best in years. The combination of the 3 acts was well arranged. And the dance choreography and the inclusion of the on field crowd of fans was really not only great, but well executed. But the camera choreography was what really made it effective. The crew did an amazing job.
As far as the musicians, they were playing to a track, which is a requirement that comes with the gig ( from what I've read the NFL requires that to insure sync and technical continuity (volume etc) both in the stadium and on the broadcast feed) ... Chris, Bruno & gang, and Beyonce were singing to the track though, which is standard procedure.

Gaga did a wonderful rendition of the anthem...almost gave me tears...and I'm not even close to
her target audience.

JMHO

It was on, but I wasn't watching. I knew going in I wouldn't like it. To me, the most outrageous spectacle of the night was Lady Gag Me totally destroying the national anthem. Even when she wasn't warbling through the scale trying to impress us with her vocal gymnastics, she was making up her own melody. Maybe that's okay for some mindless pop tunes, but I don't like it at all for the national anthem.
Show a little respect, *** (word edited so I don't get banned.)

I want her shoes

The National Anthem was fine. True, I like the traditional rhythm and scale; but it was not distasteful.

Bruno is quite an entertainer. His dancing reminded me of a young Michael Jackson, without having to clutch his tinkle.

Beyonce absolutely disgusted me. She used her appearance to celebrate the terrorist black panther movement, to celebrate the socialist malcom x, and to call for "justice' for a criminal thug that didn't follow law enforcement commands. My true feelings for this classless wench are best not posted on a public forum.
