Hard liquor suddenly makes me sick

I've had to cut way back on alcohol consumption in recent years due to its negative effects on my sleep. I used to be able to knock out 5 or 6 beers and sleep through the night, but now that I'm in my 40s, one (yes, one) drink consumed in the evening will keep me up all night. With the exception of having a drink at a nice dinner every now and then, I've basically stopped drinking. It sucks, because I love craft beer/good wine/etc., but it's not worth it anymore.

As a raging alcoholic, I can empathize with that.

I went about a year without drinking once then decided to give it another go. By day 6, I drank the six pack and tequila I had bought and since I feared a DUI, I drank the Costco two pack NyQuil I had around. I was awake for TWO DAYS.

It's weird when depressants work opposite as they should. Opiates do that to me. I'm on meds and if I take an extra, I'll vacuum my whole house, and maybe even the yard.

To the OP I was doing stuff like that when I was your age, and now I am in my mid-30's and struggling with an addiction. I have lost jobs, money, and relationships because I started using booze as a crutch in my late teens. Please re-evaluate, its no fun to sleep under bridges, parks.

Don't mean to be arrogant but I can assure you I'm not a quarter as dumb as you may think. One of my life choices may not be right, I may in a way be weak and inexperienced. Adult responsibilities and college just seem to much for me to take along with a plethora of other issues I'm not gonna talk about. And no I don't have a driver's license and I don't drive, neither am I dumb enough to get in a car while I can hardly walk, even in my drunk state. I drink exclusively at home by myself late at night so that I can go to sleep and numb my brain a little. Just because I'm young doesn't mean I'm dim witted or near sighted. Everyone can have problems at any age or financial status.

The reason for my OP was that my best friend's birthday is coming up and I don't wanna be the one guy who can't even have a shot.
I started drinking at 15-years-old. For a while it made things a lot better. I could relax around other people in a way I never could. Before that I was a loner. I started having some friends and felt accepted in some groups. Even more so when I started doing drugs.
Alcohol and drugs did make my life a lot better for a while but slowly it started making things worse until the drugs and alcohol took over my life. It was very subtle and I always thought that I was in charge but I wasn't.
You may be young but you are NOT stupid. You are trying to figure things out and that is a good thing. A lot of us here have gone through the same things as you are when we were young. Some people realized that being sick and hung-over were not a good thing. Some people realized that they just needed to cut back and not get totally wasted every time they imbibed. Those people still enjoy a few drinks and don't have a problem.
For some of us that realization took longer and some are not there yet.
Some of us who took it too far should not drink at all. I once heard alcoholism described as a pickle. If you drink enough and marinate in alcohol it can turn you into a pickle. At that point there is no going back to being a cucumber.
This is your choice and your call. You have to determine if you can enjoy a few drinks without things getting out of control. It is not always easy to determine that or even to take a hard honest look at ourselves. No matter what anyone says here YOU have to find this out for yourself.
You seem like a smart kid (to me you are a kid because I am old fart ;)) I have faith you can do this.
Help is available if you can't do it on your own.

Switch to Chrystal meth. Drinking is for pansies anyway.
I would never recommend speedy things to deal with anxiety :rollno:. Opiates & benzos will get you not feeling those pesky feelings , but don't mix them with booze or you'll likely end up like Jim, Jimi, & Janis. ;) > WInk added to indicate sarcasm ... except for the part about the 3 J's

Liquor making you sick is a good thing--as long as you don't drink it.
Saves you lots of time & money.

(This is not an anti-drinking comment--just a practical one--I am not against drinking in & of itself, but I would certainly encourage moderation & responsibility if you do drink.)
