Hate the new SX headstock?

Personally, I DETEST the whole neck, color, headstock, shape and even at $100 I'm not buying one. To answer the question of "what other $100 bass am I buying", I just bought a Yamaha RBX 170 with amp fo $100. I'm liking it just fine and I don't have to look at that hideous yellow mess.

I will agree with you that the neck color is ugly, but there is an alternative where you just apply some citistrip and it strips away that ugly yellow tint. There's a thread about it somewhere. Glad to hear you found a good alternative though! Thats one price that is hard to find a good sounding bass for.

Buying used does not count, though. It has to be a readily available $99 bass.

Old one was too reminiscent of the Fender headstock. I think the new one gives SX its own identity in a sense. Kind of like "Hey, guys! We're not trying to rip off Fender AS MUCH as before".

In saying that, I don't really give a bee's dick about headstocks. Least of my worries. The new SX headstock looks decent to me.

I just picked up an Ursa, or 'new' headstock SX. In person, it's not nearly as bad as it looks in the pictures, but I've never been a fan of 'pointy' headstocks. I could live with this one easily, but I'm thinking of altering it. I did a little photo editing on it, and just wondering what you people think:

Original.

Better, worse, or dumb?

It's totally mental for me, but I hate the new headstock and refuse to buy one. Why break something if it is not broken? I'm thankful I picked one up before the change. The old style gave it that classic, tasteful look. I can't help but think, "W_T_F_?!!?" every time I see an Ursa.

(Yes, I would buy one right now if not for the new style.)

I like the rounded headstock.
For some reason, the pointy head reminds me of a fish. I know....weird!

Could you possibly photoshop a telecaster style headstock on there? And if possible do one showing the pointy headstock and the Tele style on one one to see what would need to go from the original?

I was tossing around buying an SX just for the hell of it as most TBers who buy them have done. The new head was the deal breaker on me buying it. When its not a necessity bass, then yeah looks make a big difference in the determining factor. When you already have multiple basses then a $100 bass is more of a toy to experiment with, and the new headstock takes the creative flow off doing anything with that bass because it looks like total CRAP. I can paint a body easily enough, but I'm not into replacing the neck for $200 or trying to make a new shape out of the head like someone on here did, that's just way too much work for something that didn't need to be changed in the first place. of course this is just my reasoning behind not buying the ursa which should be called the Ursula because it looks like a hideous monster with that head.
