Have You Ever Seen A Ghost?

I'm honored by my new title.

I really didn't mean to stir up such hostility. I didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition.
NO ONE expects the Spanish Inquisition!

OK, I've caused enough trouble here and helped ruined the fun so, rather than earn more credits toward my Campfire Pisser merit badge ;) , I'll just back out of this thread. No, I'm not rage quitting. I've just seen enough strong reactions to some of my posts and decided to not cause any more agita than I have already.

Enjoy! :)

I would love to hear your story. Please ignore the campfire pissers. They should go start their own, "No Evidence of Ghost" thread.
Well, this once I'll tell it.

My sister, Linda, moved into an upstairs portion of a house that had an exterior staircase entrance. It was early autumn of 1967. She shared the placed with Judy, gal from Colorado. Ed, her boyfriend (now her husband since 1969) was over often. Shortly after moving in, things happened. Something would be out of place, a cup turned upside down, things scattered on the floor. It would happen while they were sleeping at night or it would happen when nobody was home (either at work or college classes). Small stuff at first. Along with bumps and noises they just wrote of as nothing. This was probably the occasional thing for about 3 months. Who had a key to the place:Linda, Judy, Ed and me. I would sometimes stop by and play some of her albums before completing my walk home from High School, so yes, I was there alone. Then Linda would accuse me later that day or evening of messing stuff up. I certainly did not, but she kept accusing.

Then the place started to be really trashed; bed coverings on the floor, fridge door open and stuff on the counters, couch cushions scattered about, lipstick smears on the mirrors. During this period one day Ed was lying on Linda's bed and he said he had a lady, real as could be, walk past the door and into the little room off the kitchen. He got up. Nobody there. Spooked him badly. He told Linda and Judy. They freaked out a bit. Linda calls me about it. I go over that evening. We sit down talking, I'm swearing I had never trashed anything. I'm in a chair, the rest on the couch. The board bookcase by the couch had 2 piles of magazines on the top. Judy had a small ceramic figurine of a shepard-looking guy on the shelf between the magazine piles. Suddenly it just came off the shelf, flew in a perfectly straight line thru the air about 6-8 feet, along with a weird sighing sound, and did a right-angle drop straight down into the other chair. We all froze, looked at each other and started the "Did you see that?!" crap. Everybody's talking. Nothing else happened. There was no "falling" off the shelf. We all saw the same thing. Final agreement: Poltergeist. Girls are scared, me and Ed are spooked. I leave, go home, tell Dad. He "pshaws" me.

Now go forward 2-3 days to Friday. Schools out, I walk home, stop at Linda's and go upstairs. Of course, nobody's home. My buddy, Gary, is with me. All is in order, we get bored in about 2 minutes and take off. Now the neighbor across the little alley was at his sink and saw me and Gary go up the stairs into the apartment. He did not see us leave though. So he has no idea how long we were up there. Anyway, about 6-7 PM Linda calls me, curses me out for trashing her apartment. Crap was scattered everywhere, and what really ticked her was her and Judy's, let's say "personal hygiene monthly pads" were scattered about with catsup on each one. The catsup bottle on the kitchen counter. Her proof it was me and Gary was the neighbor saw us going upstairs. I forget how she even got to talking to the guy for him to even tell her that. Anyway, Linda wanted her key back. I argued and said it was that "damned poltergeist, not me". She backed off a bit and hung up. Now Judy's gone to spend the night with her boyfriend. Ed's not there. Around midnight Linda leaves her place and shows up pounding on our front door. Dad lets her in. She's crying, all excited.

Her story (this is sometime in November now):
Goes to bed. Almost asleep. "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" playing on the record player at the foot of her bed. She hears someone coming up the exterior staircase. She hears the locked door open and she hears "high heels" tapping across the kitchen to stand in front of her bedroom door. She calls out thinking its Judy. No answer. The door starts to open and she freaks and pulls covers over her head. Steps approach her bed, she hears breathing as something/body just stands there. Steps go to end of her bed. Music stops. Steps come back to her side. A few moments pass the step go out of the room, closing the door, across the kitchen, open+closing of THAT door and down the exterior staircase. Gone. Linda waits a while, gathers her courage, runs out of the place and comes to us.
Next morning she contacts Judy, both want to stay at our house because they refuse to spend another day there. Dad calls the owner who meets us in the front lawn. Linda goes over the story of what happened. The owner, I'll never forget his face, admitted (his words) the place was "haunted" and every tenant the last 15-20 years moved out because of poltergeist stuff. He could never tell new renters or he would never be able to rent it out. He agreed to let the girls move out and refund the balance of their rent. Pretty weird. Funny thing, not a thing ever happened in the downstairs part of the house. Ever.
We all went upstairs (Ed was still in Pittsburgh with parents so he did not help) and just started moving everything out. Took most of the day. Funny thing, in Linda's bedroom the record was still going, the needle on it. But no sound. No sound off that record ever again. Linda threw it away, all spooked about THAT as well.

Sorry for length of tale. Tried to be short with it.
But that's what happened. Period. You tell me.

P.S.
'68 went in the Army. On the few times I was ever able to get back to visit family I never bothered about what happened.

2009: Then when I moved back to Ohio in 2009, visited Findlay and had the urge to go by that house. It was even more ramshackle and ready to fall down. Bottom portion appeared to be tenanted. Upstairs, the scene of the story, looked like nobody has lived in it for years and years. The old exterior staircase was still there, almost bare of paint now and looked damn rickety. The door window had been boarded up. I admit I was a little spooked looking at the place. I also admit I'd not want to go into that apartment. Irrational...yeah,perhaps. Then again, maybe better to let sleeping dogs lie, ya know?

2015: Now, it is all nice. A porch is added to the upstairs entrance with a staircase still there, the house is painted. Looks very nice. You'd never guess. And the tree is still there in the front where, underneath it, we talked to the owner in '67.

How did you rule out the possibility of an unauthorized human visitor?

c'mon, Hoff...please think a little, especially about the ceramic figure event.
- nobody had keys for starters except us 4 and never a break-in of any sort. Somebody breaking in for months and never seen? Not real likely. The house is not out in the desert by itself and yet some guy is going to do this stuff to the same place for 15-20 years?
- stuff happened overnight when they were home remember
- uh...nobody else was there when that ceramic figure flew across the room...that was fairly easy to rule out that someone else was also there making it happen, Hoff
- the owner admitted the place had "haunting" problems for so many years
- I don't know anyone that can "erase" a frickin' vinyl album right in the room...do you?
- Ed saw that lady pass and go into the little room. No way outta there. But she was gone.

What else can I tell you?

How are you certain no one else had keys? Wouldn't the constant rearranging of the apartment suggest break-ins were happening? Was there an attic? Was the downstairs apartment permanently occupied? Did you look at the surface of the album? Reading vinyl is a pretty simple mechanical process.

Sounds like some woman had access to the apartment somehow.

As for the ceramic figurine, no clue, I simply don't have enough information. The human brain is a trickster: you see what you think you see, not necessarily what happens.

Did you ever change the locks? Are you absolutely certain that room had no access?

i think it's cool that the ghosts used the doors. helps explains how they didn't sink through the floor when they are on the second story.
Probably didn't want to leave a mess of ectoplasm by phasing through everything, how considerate. Catsup pads on the other hand are fair game.

It was kind of them to turn off the turntable while Linda was trying to sleep.

Yeah, that darn figurine, it sure tricked us all. Well...never mind, Hoff, never mind.

I'm guessing it was an old house yes?

old house are notorious for bad wiring which can cause high EMF levels...

symptoms can vary a lot between sufferers, but will normally include some of the following: Visual and auditory hallucinations, sleep disturbance, tiredness, depression, headaches, restlessness, irritability, concentration problems, forgetfulness, learning difficulties, frequent infections, blood pressure changes, limb and joint pains, numbness or tingling sensations, tinnitus, hearing loss, impaired balance, giddiness and eye problems. There have been reports of cardiovascular problems such as tachycardia, as well as various forms of cancer, though these are relatively rare.

searching for something else and stumbled across this personal experience from a couple of years ago:

'this morning i woke at 3 am. i saw/sensed a hovering head about a yard away from my head. it was a faintly glowing opaque thing sort of bobbing up and down. i was not anywhere near fully awake. i was startled but not scared. i tried to focus on the head and noticed it had tiny wings on either side, helping it to hover/flutter slightly above and to the side of me. just out of arm's reach. i slowly came to realize it was not an ugly head at all, but rather a misshapen corpulent nebulous blobular body that had a very tiny, perhaps vestigial head on top. as i began to sit up it vanished.'

weird huh?
