Double Bass Headway EDB1 preamp

(apologies for copying my text from another thread:)

My only problem with the Headway is: I want to use its comprehensive EQ to tailor my stage sound, through whatever good or crappy speaker/combo I'm using that gig. Sometimes I have to get drastic with the EQ to get a pleasant onstage sound.
(At the moment I'm using an Eminence semi-acoustic DB with a modified Realist -- which sounds more than fine; but speakers vary widely.)

But the Headway's D.I. is post EQ. So whatever raggedy-a$$ response curve I'm sending to my amp goes to FOH/PA, too -- not ideal.
If I want my Headway EQ for on stage only, I would need a D.I. in front of it to send the PA a relatively flat signal.

Has anyone else run into this? If so, what D.I. have you settled on?

Tia.

Bump!

Headway users: So no one else feels the need to sculpt their stage tone, but send an un-EQ'd signal out the D.I.?

Thanks
I don't have this issue. Most EQ settings I use can and should apply to FOH in my circumstances.

I could see situations where that's not the case. If I did have these issues I'd be inclined to use the Headway for front of house and my older but no longer made Fishman Dual Parametric EQ to address any stage monitor issues I had rather than use a different DI for my DB.

If you use another DI in front of the Headway you loose the sonic benefit of having the front end of the Headway load your pickup tone and it just becomes yet another gain stage with an EQ.

Perhaps you could have someone modify your DI with a pre/post EQ switch.

That was my first reaction, too. I EQ to compensate for the sound of a room, and would always send the "post EQ" signal to the house anyway. But I can also see why having the option would be worthwhile.

I used the Headway both weeks on the faculty concerts at the Aebersold workshops in Comstock hall, which is notoriously muddy and boomy. Lynn Seaton made a point to come up and tell me that the sound was as clear as a bell, and several students had the same reaction afterwards. That's exactly why I keep the Headway... for rooms like that one. For most rooms, it's not necessary, but when you need it, you really need it.

Hey, guys.

Does anyone know where one can purchase EDB-1 in Cleveland, OH? My friend is going to the US and can pick this unit up for me, but I`m not familiar with local music stores. Or is it better to order one via online store to his address in Cleveland? Advice needed.

Thanks.

George

Good points, U.T.

Luckily I think I've located a quality D.I. with a nice high input impedance, which should load my pickup well.
But in an ideal world, I'd only have one device to wire between bass and amp/monitor -- and also, only one device to power.

The thing is: amps and monitors can have vastly differently response curves than P.A.'s. And I don't feel I personally have the ear (nor the perspective) to EQ for the house from where I am on stage. The best I can do is dial me up an inspiring tone to play thru that'll be audible to me over the rest of the band.

Soon I'll probably be getting a relatively flat, compact powered P.A. cab to use onstage. That should match up with FOH a lot better than most bass speakers. But even then, it'll have very different amount of lows coming out of it -- which I still might want to adjust.
And I do like having the Headway's 5 bands to EQ onstage.

Perhaps you could have someone modify your DI with a pre/post EQ switch.

Interesting idea. I wonder how easy that would be on the Headway?

Contact the company. They may have some ideas about modifying the box. Also, they may suggest jumpers to hardwire it pre eq yourself if you don't mind it being permanently that way.

Thanks for the suggestion Phil, I may do that.

For some reason I get a bit of a vibe from John Littler, though. I'm sure he's a decent guy, but I have a feeling that he put so much sweat into choosing the right (and necessary) compromises between mega-features and saleable price, that he's a bit touchy when you suggest something could be improved or added. :^>

For now, I think my path of least resistance is to stick a quality, hi-Z input D.I. (which I want to have one of around for general utility anyway) in front.

If I decide I'd rather use the Headway between bass and FOH, I have other little EQing gizmos that I could try between the Headway's line out and amp/stage speaker.

Thanks for your always helpful perspective, guys!

Got the preamp and all I have to say is....WHOA! AI vs EDB-1= no contest, mic or pickup.

You mean, simply running your bass thru the Headway vs. the AI's pre, gives that dramatic an improvement to the sound?
And I take it this is before you even start messing with the EDB-1's EQ?

Do you figure you just like the basic voicing of it better? Or do you think, by contrast, it shows up the limitations of the AI?
(I've never tried an AI, so no comment.)

hi guys this sounds like what i am looking for i am currently using a realist into a borrowed Baggs venue DI into iamp and NL210 and getting a good workable tone. But the extra features of a second chanel and a HPF (the venue has notch only) should be good.

The realist into the baggs is pretty hot i have the gain set on the baggs and about 9 oclock. Anyone have any idea how it would compare to the Baggs?

When I use a realist and my Sennheiser Dynamic mic together the input gain on the realist side is at about 9oclock and the mic side is at 3 oclock. The output gain is pretty hot without EQ, I can't run it over half on the master without lots of distortion going into whatever I'm going into.
