Help me to appreciate matching headstocks

...when plain headstocks are available and more typical of the classic look...Peaveys...have matching or distinctively colored headstocks...

Maybe it's just me since i never bought a new Peavey but for a number of years i was strictly a second hand Peavey guy because it was really all i could afford. Of those many basses all but one had a matching headstock and if you want to split hairs my T40 had a clear coated natural ash body and a clear coated natural maple headstock, so i'd say a lot of Peavey basses came with matching headstocks, at least IME. ​

Normally I prefer a natural headstock. But every once in awhile I get dat GAS for a bass with a matcherooni:

I prefer that the carpet matches the drapes.

Wood floor all the way. Carpet could be hiding prior damage.

Every time I see a Fender with the all-natural neck and head and a gorgeous body color, it makes me think of a beautiful car with a bare metal hood, or everything in bare metal forward of the windshield. A production shortcut that's become an unfortunate norm, I've never liked that look and never will.

Those head stocks do not remotely match.

Matching head stocks are for bass players who want some of the attention guitarists naturally get.

Anybody know where I can get a natural maple top P with a candy apple red headstock? I think that would be so cool and it wouldn't be all matchy matchy.

Krylon has a CAR color.
Get a maple P and have st it with the rattle can.
If you want a really professional job, remove the tuners before you spray, or at least mask them off.
If you're in a punk band— skip that step.

As a designer, I like to see no more than 2 main colors on an object.

All maple neck and headstock? Looks great, no matter what color body/pickguard.
Rosewood fretboard with plain maple headstock? Ugly on every color guitar body.
I either want the whole neck one color, or the headstock matching the body, painted or natural.

Maybe this is a thread about carefully crafting thread titles more so than one about which is a better choice in headstock finishes. I fall into the matching group. Three basses with headstocks that match their bodies. Two basses with headstocks that match their fingerboards. Something gotta match, people!

i don't care for the matching headstock very often but i do like it when yamaha matched the headstock with the neck through part of the body....

for a punk band, I'd just open a can of red paint and dip the head in it.

I think matching head stocks look fantastic on most basses. Most bongos have a painted neck so it just goes, although even on my roasted neck Starry Night bongo it looks amazing. Then there's the Dingwall ABZ which has the head stock matching the fretboard. So good!

Aside from Fender (and Fender derivatives), aren't matching headstocks the norm? Is this code for hating anything that isn't Fender or G&L?
