Help Munjibunga prove his point about short scales!!!

Now I find myself GAS'ing for one of these:

Yeah, I know, pretty different than a solidbody SX or Mustang, but this thread has got me thinking of shortscales in general. I used to know a guy who had one of these old Kents. Obviously a copy of a Hoffman beatle bass but IMO is actually cooler thanks to the reverse cutaway, slanted pickup, and cool red color (they also came in natural and sunburst). No doubt the weakness would be the pickpus but I'll bet a Fralin or a Nordstrand could rewind them to sound good.

Oh frak, Jefenator. You're giving me a bad gas attack. They are $150 at the Aero ebay store + $20 shipping. Are they really that good?

I guess I also should mention that the SX had upgraded 250K CTS pots and a 0.047 mfd orange drop cap.

I've done a lot of pickup swapping in the last year or so and usually I don't get blown away like I hope to. Old problems still persist or new ones pop up.

The Aero upgrade has been the most night-and-day upgrade I've ever done. My '78 Musicmaster in stock form was barely stage-worthy - now every time I play it out, the sound thoroughly rocks my world. The response is more satisfying than any other axe I've ever used.

So I'd say that was $150 well-spent. YMMV of course.

Seriously man, don't sweat it. Just about any bass would sound appropriate for that type of "driving riff" bass line, especially in that range. If they all sound pretty good does it really matter? A lot of aspects of effective bass playing is "blue collar" stuff, like pounding nails or digging ditches. Some bassists that turn this into brain surgery just end-up getting in everybody's way while they're over thinking, over amping and over q-ing anyway.
Sorry for the ranting derail, but seriously, you're cool, don't sweat this.

Honestly, I'm not sweating it all...I oft forget that sarcasm is a tricly thing here in the interweb. I know my basses apart from one another, and which ones I don't like.

And in light of the answer I don't feel so bad about it. In fact, the fact that I couldn't tell them apart and liked them is a compliment to the OP.

Well, I don't think I did that poorly. You can call it 60 percent, but I called two out of three short scales. As someone else said, maybe I should drop some Nordies in my Mustang. I suspect that's the biggest weakness of the bass.

... or swap the RI for an original.

B and D sound Jazz bass ish to my ears. A, C and E sound like short scales.
Although I'm thinking C could be a long scale P bass.
Mustang = A or E.

This thread will probably be cited whenever someone mentions that the SXs are "good for the price" and the mustangs were, after all, "student basses".

Don't be too surprised if you like the stock SX pups. It's not like aftermarket pups are needed to get a great tone from an SX shortie.

Yay I guessed right, although with reservations.

You should never judge a bass by it's scale length. First of all, it's the player that matters. a good player can make a cheap bass sound better. Let's listen to basses instead of judging them by looks! I'm currently waiting for my custom 32" 5-string, which has a b-string that kicks so much but you wouldn't believe it's not 34"!

Well I'll be sheep dipped! I called C and E correctly, but I (like many other respondants) liked the sound of B best. Never would have guessed that's an SX shortie. I guess the Nordie pups really live up to all the hype!

Not sure what is what, but in order of which ones I would pick for a recording session, as a player or as a producer, specially as a producer:
1-B
2-D
3-E

A and C wouldn't qualify for me.

Funny, I listened in the same way (looking for the sound I liked with no regard to guessing scale) and came up almost exactly the same order except E wouldn't make it and C would be at the bottom of the ones that did. B is my favorite by far.

Of top of that, they just perpetuate the exact same myths that this thread disproved. Initially I wanted to go on an anti-bashing campaign, but I realized I can't really combat the ignorance, so I just wanted to vent here.

They certainly couldn't have hurt. I am VERY pleased with the Nordstrand set I just put in my J-bass.

And it's so weird how the same people can't search around here to find people who actually might like a Mustang or a Bronco, but then they just go bashing.

Heck, I don't a lot of styles/brands or basses, but I won't go out and call them a turd or dismiss their whole class of bass because of my personal opinion. I think this is a form of discrimination, LOL!
