who thinks that? you've got a lot of folks chiming in as if they accept your 'observation' of "many people" as valid/truth/objective....I don’t understand why there’s many people that think upgrading a Squier or any cheap bass means the value of the instrument goes up.

"resale value" is the poorest reason to choose one ax over another...unless you don't know what you really want/need in the first place (e.g., you're "gambling") --- in which case: don't modify the thing (duh!).
i agree! but it's also true that a new $800 bass will never be worth $800 (again) after you've played it as your own.A $400 bass with $400 worth of upgrades will never be worth $800.
