This was my first time seeing this.....

WOW!

I have a friend who builds locally, from scratch. He goes to auctions to buy old furniture sometimes, to get old, nicely figured, real wood that is hard to find.

This is going to be a beautiful piece. Take your time - it is really a piece of art!

what scale length did you decide on in the end?

well im stickin with a 36 so i dont have to order strings

yea. i would definately do those before the top goes on. i used some see through paper from the drafting room traced the hollow spaces, and redrew them on the top, so i could make the cutouts and contours and not risk runing into the hollow space.
how light did you get the body? are you aiming for a more hollow or solid sound? controls? when are you estimating it done?

yea i need to get a different bushing for my router soon so i can do all the small details. i did my best to compensate for arm contours and such so i shouldnt have any problems. im still bein careful tho. im not sure what the weight is now but its pretty light. i still have alot of carving to do before i weigh it. controls, i might not even do any i might just do a on and off switch or just a volume. i dont like to mes with the natural sound. im not really goin for a particular tone but id like to have a like very bright and hollow sound. i wish i had the money for a peizo system cause thats what i origionally wanted to do.

thats a good idea, i remember i was at a bar wayy up north and all of the tables ere made out of like 2 inch thick mahogony i think very old but very figured, i was just itchen to cut it up.

Thanks, well i dont know about now but thats the goal. My next project might be for a costomer but i dont think my skill is quite up to par yet with some of the builders on here. i want to do a few more basses before i seriously try and sell them.

Thats understandable. Well, if/when you decide to offer to build one for a customer let me know. I would happily shell out the dough for one of those! If your friend decides not to have one made, I got dibs!! lol

thanks very much. i might actually build another for myself cause this kid wants a tremlo 3 pickups and all of this crazy stuff and only wants to pay like 200 for labor. so i might just do another for myself. i dont know yet,



OK here is some more news. i cut the f hole and its not perfect but i think it looks pretty good i am doin alot of body coutouring and i got the fretboard binding done. its been slow cause ive been gone all week for holidays. but now schools starting up again so i can bring the beast in and show my teacher what i can do.

this is the body i wiped it with mineral spirits but ist still kinda hard to see how much has been taken off. i really want to get the weight down so im doin as much as i can.

sweet! what is the width of the binging? how many strings? the fb is sort of looking like a reverse of how i am doing mine (bloodwood fb with cherry binding). great looking wood combo!

I dont see a problem with that Fhole whatsoever ! Nice build so far Paul. definitely a nice plan too. Keep it up ! (the hell with 200$ of labor, build another for yourself !! hehehe)

great looking f-hole, how did you do it? drilling a bunch of holes and then sanding? coping saw? I've been doing some by hand but they never come out that sharp, especially if we do the florentine ones like you did. Heck, yours looks almost has clean as the ones we have CNCed... (at least from that photo)

Thanks to everyone. Jordan, the binding is about 1/4 inch. and its a 6 string. i was gonna do a rabbit on the sides and do it that way but the marblewood did not want to cooperate it chipped like crazy so i had to join the sides off and just glue it right to the sides. Sargebaker, i dtikked all the holes and knocked out the some of the bulk with a dremel just enough to get a file in and i did the rest with various files. it came out really smooth but wenge is really prone to splintering so it was difficult. but i did it so all the chipping happened on the side that wont be seen.

I am very impressed. Your design is soothing with a few attention grabbing features. You wood selection is pleasing as well. Your woodwrking skills are extremely strong on top of that. I would have not guessed that you were in your teens.

Congratulation on having wisdom beyond your years and I wish you continues success with this as well as future projects.

This is a seriously professional looking project. I honestly clicked on this link expecting something more akin to a Wishbass on acid, but I'm truly impressed with your skills, all the more so at your age. Looks like TB has a rising star on its hands.

well i made some progress over the weekend.....
Pickup cavity= done
Neck pocket = almost done ( needs sone fitting still
input jack= done ( forgot to take a picture sorry)
Soundhole on upper lobe= in progress (look in picture you can see it)

and i also made a miter box for fret slotting but i forgot to take a picture of that also.
