all i have to say is holy S , you sir have quite a career ahead of u man. and if you think youre not all that ready, well id say your damn close. theres luthiers out there that do far worse work. i guess on of the best things from this tho is that youre saving urself a butload of bank and getting some awesome experience out of it. youve given me some ideas for when i actually man up and decide to make an attempt myself. and inspiration man, truely.

Thanks, it helps that my parents are supportive. and most everyone at school is exept my woodshop teacher. he is starting to appreciate it but it doesnt matter to me. The only problem i have with building people basses is time constrictions cause i have quite alot on my plate at the moment. and the fact that people are picky and want alot of electronics. well at least the people that were interested. i say go for it get a build started and take it at your own pace. i hope to be posting on your build thread sometime.

wow, first time seeing this thread and that really is a beautiful looking bass, love the fretboard look, love the body shape, if i ever get famous ima contact you to make me a one off four string

thank you, the fretboard turned out nice but it stinks when you use it on the belt sander... like it smells really bad like stale burnt popcorn. and it splinters alot. but i guess the way it looks now was worth it.

yea i never realized that my design ideas were so unusual untill i read some reactions after the first post. my next build i am looking to make it a little calmer and tone it down a bit.
and thanks im gonna try and stick with this. hopefully ill be up to where you are some day

Very nice. As far as the scarf that way, I don't remember seeing anyone else do that, and I always wondered why not. The closest I know of is Ken Smith basses, where the volute extends a bit up into the headstock.

I guess you'll have to be more careful on your tuner layout.

i like it better its smother cause theres no valute . so far as i have checked the tuners wont conflict with it but who knows i might be wrong.

coming together nice. lol. i was going to do he same thing in abolone dots for the fb.

i woulde do albolone but i dont know where to get it around here i dont think the woodcraft by me has it. s i just filled mine with this epoxy stuff. it comes mahogony colored. the dots on the side of the fretboard will be aluminium

thankyou very much .well im not big on the looks of knobs and pickups so its just a emg hertz under a wooden pickup cover and a volume knob. more pictures will be flowing in this week cause i get out of school at 1030 everyday because of exams. so more shop time for me.

Yeah I have.. (probably mahogany body (transparent red finish) with wenge neck & indian rosewood fingerboard).. should produce a warm jazzy sound with some punch. But I'm not sure about the design yet.. I find it hard to come up with a refreshing design... I'll give it some more time I think.

So i made some more progress. I installed the volume pot in the side of the body and i made a removable cover on the back to get to the electronics with. also i decided to put a shim on the meck to move the fretboard away from the body. its about 1/8th inch thick. and i made a pickup cover i still need to mill it out to go over the pickup but im doin that tommorow. oh and i finished with the second soundhole.

here is the acess panel. i know the wood doesnt match i am trying to locate a better peace without the sapwood to use so it doesnt stand out.

here is the electronic guts of the beast. its not much just a volume, input and emg. but thats all i want.

here is the pickup cover. i am going to try and bevel the edges so from the front you can see a red outline.

OK so i drilled the pupil part too big on accedent i dont hate it but i think it could look better but i guess im kinda stuck with it. i still have some detailing to do. but is there any suggestions on making it look a little better? and sisnce its wenge theres some chiping and its not noticeable from 5 feet away but does anyone know of a way to fill it without making it stand out? maybe just clear epoxy? i dont know

So i had my camera out so i decided to do a "virtual tour" of my shop.

and all the other majic takes place in this small dusty crowded room... note that there is a joiner, planer and band saw on the floor because im all out of bench top space. im trying to convince my mother to let me expand turn her "workout room" into a shop. she never uses it and all thats in there is a ancient exercize bike and a gazelle. yes, yes the one tony little advertised. i dont think she has been in there for months. ill get it eventually.

Could you fill the hole with a contrasting color dowel, then drill out just the center of the dowel, leaving a ring? Then you'd have an iris with a pupil in the center, and it would look intentional and very unique.

I was thinking the same thing but had no idea how to phrase it. I would have tried to press in a ring or something. I guess that's why I buy 'em and don't build 'em! LOL

I don't think it looks bad, but this idea is a good one.

First of all, do NOT change your designs,based on my input! If you want to "mellow" a few things to make what you're doing more commercially acceptable, within reason, fine, but make sure you keep YOU in what you do. I think that what you have there would be a "tough sell" in a shop, but for what you want, it's perfect. I did not see that as a commercial build, but a personal one, and that's what my comment was in reference to.

Second, I'm not "up there", I don't do anything close to what you do. I'm just the guy that pushes buttons and answers the phone. Now the guys out in the shop, they're pretty impressive!

Keep it going like that and you will make a fine luthier of yourself. Maybe in some years I'll be buying a 5 strings PPK Batwing - "John Turner" signature bass

I meant it in the same manner there is F Bass Alain Caron sig. 5 strings, or any other signature bass in different number of strings.

You can also fill with a dowel, and then drill a bit off center, to make it look like the eye is looking a certain direction. But I'd definitely try that on scrap to see if it's a good look, first.

well here is what i came up with i ended up pluging it up with a peice of padouk. it looks alrigh but i still with it couldhave came out better. i glued the top on and put a 1/2 roundover on the edges BUT after i made the first pass with the bosch router at school i looked down and saw some deep sctatches in the top. i gues some not so smart shop teacher put some cheap screws in the base plate and the heads stuck out about a good 32nd of an inch so i have much sanding ahead of me. but other than that it turned out well. i put the arm contour in the body as you can see in the picture. i think it looks hot even tho i busted my pinky knuckle on the belt sander in the process of doing it. i forgot to take a close up of the eye but that will be coming on the next update. tomorrow i am doing the cutaway at the body joint.
