I finally got around to watching the final two episodes of the season today. I was glad to see Athelestan reunited with Ragnar. Ecbert tried his best to seduce him with the Roman knowledge, but he seemed to recognize that the King saw him more as an asset, while Ragnar regarded him as family. It was also interesting to see that Ecbert was learning from the Roman scrolls, and that's how he set his trap for the Vikings. And all the while he's been using Aella for manpower.
The final episode was a little puzzling. I didn't really know which way Floki was going to go until Horik stated that he thought he couldn't trust him. At that point I think Floki recognized that Horik was trying to manipulate and use him, too.
I'm wondering where the next season might go. Ragnar has his agreement with Ecbert to colonize parts of Wessex. But that means he also has to find new lands to raid. I would think that means that the Northmen will have to venture further, to places like France and Ireland. From some of what I've read it appears that Rollo led raids to France, notably to areas like Normandy. Normandy owes it's regional name to the fact that it was invaded by the Norse.
The final episode was a little puzzling. I didn't really know which way Floki was going to go until Horik stated that he thought he couldn't trust him. At that point I think Floki recognized that Horik was trying to manipulate and use him, too.

I've seen Donal Logue portray abusive people in a a position of power who meet a gruesome end in three different shows over the last year or so...

If so, that's one of the most downer movies I ever watched...
My problem with Donal Logue was in the "suspension of disbelief" department. I remember him from a 90's sitcom he did and I couldn't get past it for "Vikings". So, it was, literally, my problem.
Yeah. Valhalla Rising is not a movie to screen at a birthday party.
Sigh, no new episode of Vikings tonight. What to do? I know, watch the season two finale again.

More likely, I think that Ecbert will try to use Ragnar and the Northmen for his own purposes in order to take control of Mercia. I thought that he made that much clear in his coucil with King Aella. And I think Ecbert is using Aella as well.
I've watched that last episode 3 times now and I think the whole thing with Floki was really needlessly confusing. I think they tried way too hard to make it look like he really was in cahoots with Horik.
At the end when Floki tells Horik he "only betrayed him" was to lead us to believe that he never, ever entertained a thought of betraying Ragnar? Yet...do we really know that? Why lie to Helga??? Why stuff mushrooms down Rollo's throat? Horik didn't see that so why do it? (Although Rollo did indeed seem to fare much better after the mushrooms when we see him wielding his axe against Horik's men) But as Webtroll posted above that the way he stuffed the shrooms into Rollo was not done in the spirit of healing. I agree -which further confuses us.
Then Floki thumps Rollo's chest and the poor man almost has a damn seizure. So was he there to help? Or was he there to mess with Rollo, that was not made clear at all. Unless it is because we in the USA are missing those cut scenes?
Why play games with Ragnar's son making him swear to keep a secret when it was all ruse anyway and Thorstein was not going to die? Those kinds of details were not needed...and make no sense after we find out that Floki was a double agent. There was no need at all to mess with Ragnar's young son like that, telling him the story about Loki and the poison dripping on his face. Unless of course it was to keep things quiet for those who were not in on the plan. All he needed was to have towns people wanting to lynch him because the wee one lets it slip that Floki gave Thorstein mushrooms. So maybe that was legit.
It was all totally confusing and contradictory which maybe (and who knows as the show is not making any of it clear which is really starting to bug me) leads me to believe that perhaps Floki is playing up the Loki trickster persona. He is impossible to figure out. He is a loner, he seems some how tortured by what he has to do to Horik, and if we notice...he never takes a stab at Horik in the end, after everyone else got their swipe at him. Floki gently touches his face...as if he really did care about Horik. What the heck is that?? None of it adds up.
Sooooo maybe the whole point is that Floki really IS the trickster...yet ---- to keep with the confusion of his character for us- he is also very attached to people seeing him as trust worthy??? Yet he is two faced? We may never know if he was tempted by Horik's delusions of grandeur regardless of the final episode. But he did seem tortured by what he had to do to Horik and he never axes him when he gets the chance...so who the heck is Floki???? Given how enraged Floki got at Rollo for his betrayal and how he doesn't like Athlestan because he felt he betrayed them...the ULTIMATE betrayal came from Horik and yet Floki could not bring himself to axe the man just once for all the trouble he caused????

And there had been some subtle indications (glances between Floki and Ragnar to indicate they were up to something all along etc..) it had to be an elaborate plan all along. Ragnar's kids were ushered away, as was Helga. So there was a plan in place. We still don't know if Floki and Siggy were with Ragnar all along or they made their choice to betray Horik when he started talking murder.

Although!! In that last episode do you guys remember when Floki gets clearly frustrated as he is trying to get Horik to just spill his murder plot and Horik stalls saying he can't trust Floki?? I think Siggy and Floki were both baiting Horik, trying and waiting for Horik to just say it, to just say that he planned to murder Ragnar and his family. So they could report that back to Ragnar and make their plan to finally kill Horik.

Bummer about Torstein and his arm, but that must be the Viking way. I'm sure he knew what was going to happen once he climbed to the top of the hill - go out in a blaze of glory.

I was SO BUMMED they killed Torstien off too
and the way he went so sad, and yet with honor I suppose...now I am reeling over Siggy!!! I read an interview that she asked Michael Hirst to write her off because she had urgent family business and she could not be in Ireland for so long. But honestly every time I've seen the actress in an interview it seemed to me she really hadn't bonded with the other cast members and she was on the outside. Clearly Katheryn Winnick, Travis Fimmel, Clive Standan and George Blangdon have all become good friends. But she just didn't seem to fit in for some reason. I wonder if she was just not haviing a good time any more? Or maybe she really does have family things to deal with...either way I was sad to see her go. What an amazing scene. I'd say that deed of hers, saving Ragnar's sons pays for all. He better honor her when and if he goes back to Kattegat!I also LOVED the end of episode 4 when Eckbert and Ragnar are talking: do you think yourself a good man? Er.. yes, I think so. Do you? Yes...I think so. Are you corrupt?? Yes, Yes....they didn't even look at each other, I thought that scene was AWESOME!!!

her face....but Rollo recovered from pretty bad injuries, maybe she will too.Yes! Loving those journals from Athelstan! And his love interest in Judith, eek they are hot!! Finally we get to see him live a little!!! But I fear what the young prince will do when he finds out Athlestan knocked up his wife whilst he was away in battle. Bad news....very bad.
