Yeah I thought that was real and needed, that expression from Rollo. He has to be having an internal conflict. I think seeing Lagertha down must have really effected him. Lust for power....nasty business. How can one ever have peace again knowing they betrayed their own people?? That is just messed up.

How did you find out that Clive Standen is leaving??

Wow I guess slowing the footage down reveals a lot, I didn't see Ivar and Floki fighting, but that makes sense as Floki is charged with educating him.

I can't imagine the person to step up and challenge Ragnar would be Aslaug. She cant fight, and the only way to become king other than having it passed on by him dying and one of his sons being appointed, is to kill him. She can't kill him, so it won't be her. I agree with you, I think Ragnar isn't done. I imagine Bjorn and Ragnar will rule together. Ragnar isn't done yet and I am sure his people will forgive him. They forgave Rollo of worse when he turned against them the first time.

I didn't see the scene with Bjorn and Rollo!!!?? Bjorn wanted him dead just as much as everyone else! I can't imagine that. I gotta re watch everything to keep up with Hawk Eye Mike!!

AH! Okay I paused the clip and saw Bjorn and Rollo coming through a door together looking rather bloodied up, I wonder what on earth brings them together!! I also wonder if Lagertha's injuries impede her in any way from going into battle in the future.

We also see a clip of Ragnar surrounded by his sons going into battle so they must reconcile their feelings of being betrayed by his leaving. I need to get the sons straight. Because the one who seemed the most steadfast as a youngster was the one who found Floki hiding under the water after his escape when he was being punished for killing Athlestan. Was that Uber?

We also see Halfdan lined up with Bjorn and his brothers, ready for battle. No Harald in any clips I caught.
I didn't see what you saw, Ragnar and his sons lined up, but I'll watch it a few more times.
The Rollo/Bjorn scene has me really intrigued. Maybe Rollo joins Bjorn to the Mediterranean? Against Wessex? Maybe they aren't 'together', but arrived at the same place at the same time to save/rescue someone, something? Lagertha?
The guy behind them drawing his sword looks like a Viking, so whatever they are battling must be in that room.

I will be curious to learn how Ragnar redeems himself. He called himself out in front of everyone, and he was right. I wonder if he took care of something while he was 'away' that will make everyone love him again.

Are Halfdan and Harald those the two new guys who think they can over throw Kattegat and become king of all of them? The guys who look Celtic with the celtic tattoos on their heads?? One of them dies on the boats fighting the French. Unless I am thinking of the wrong dudes??

Okay so as I watch t his again it almost seems as though the Seer and Gisla are influencing the gods from afar! As Ragnar says "one of us will die today and it will not be me," --- you can hear the gods groaning in the back ground. Like in some way, implying that they will both lose, they will both be punished for their foolishness.

I also this time caught that Lagertha was heading to help Ragnar with Rollo when she gets pounded in the back of the head (and then stabbed) Then Bjorn is forced to chose between his mother and his father (a familiar theme for Bjorn in his life) he goes to help Lagertha and in the end, it is her falling that ends the whole battle. They chose to get her out of there instead of keep at it, which was wise because clearly they would have lost. Wild battle scene

Do you know who it was that pushed Ragnar onto the boat?? I couldn't see that

OH and I saw the strangling of Roland and his sister, well we have to give it to that schmarmy little puss of an emperor, he had them pegged!

Also the one who said he didn't care about Ragnar's fame when the brothers were all talking with Bjorn.

Yes, that is them. Harald is king, Halfdan his brother. Halfdan takes an arrow to the upper left chest during the final battle. There is a scene as they sail back where you see Harald tapping him on the cheek as Halfdan gazes back towards Paris, so he survives too.
Then, in the sneak preview you linked to, Halfdan can be scene to the left of Bjorn as they line up for battle.

In the end, I don't think anyone important died in those battles, but they did a great job making us think they might have.

He has the lead role in a new series, TV adaption of the movie series Taken, and has fulfilled his contractual obligations for Vikings. It was more speculation than actual fact.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think he dies or rides off into the sunset in the second half of this season.

I wonder if we'll get any closure on Yidu and the drugs she was giving Ragnar. I'd think that will come up between Ragnar and Aslaug.

They look so young in season 1. Ragnar and Lagertha especially. Maybe they make Ragnar look worn because, well he is. All those battles and near misses with death. I remember that scene with Rollo, I almost didn't like him after that. He is complicated that character. It would be sad to see him go, but, eventually one of the main characters will have to go. In history, he has a long career in France, but I know they don't stick too closely to actual history.

I thought for sure Halfdan was a goner! Those two are trouble, they are gonna cause problems eventually.

Let us know if you figure out who got Ragnar on the boat!

Yeah, I am noticing it too as I work through season one. Masterful job of writing and producing.
For example, the difficult relationship Rollo and Ragnar have.

I have a couple of questions and I, being completely comfortable in my uselessness, am more comfortable asking here instead of searching elsewhere or continue wondering.

The wanderer. About the time he arrived, a fisherman came to Kattegat with a couple of dead kids in his net. Then Siggy dies (which REALLY bothered me the first time I saw that episode). Then in the current season, he returns and the other Siggy is discovered dead in a stream.

What gives? Does Harbard take lives in return for giving comfort?


I hand it to you Mike and sagagirl. Because of you guys, I understand more about the show than I would've without youse.

As for @sagagirl, such a perfect username for this discussion. Thanks for being a part of it.

As for Harbard, that is another name for Odin. He doesn't necessarily take lives in exchange for others by rule. At first, I thought maybe he was just some hobo type guy, taking advantage of peoples belief in Odin to get free food, housing, sex, etc, but the supernatural powers he displayed makes me think maybe he is some kind of mythological figure.
Curious to me is Ragnar and Harbard have never met.

I don't have any traceable roots to Scandinavia, but that region of the world is very intriguing to me. So much so that the wife and I almost moved to Denmark a couple years ago. I don't consider myself an authority on the history or culture of the Scandinavians, but I do read up on it and watch other programs about them. However, my wife is of Finnish decent, so meeting some of her family has been very interesting.

Thanks guys! So nice to have a place to discuss this show :)

I agree about Harbard. He prays upon lonely women when their men are away, he would never come around while Floki or Ragnar were there. I am remembering when he first arrives in Kattegat Aslaug, Siggy and Helga all dream of him before gets there and do you remember that Siggy started to become suspicious of him?? Then she turns up dead? It is like he knows their thoughts.

Now he is tormenting Aslaug, she seems to have started drinking and becoming crazed over him after trying to possess him. (when she gets jealous after her son leads her to the place where he is having sex with one of the other women in Kattegat) after that, when she confronts him, she is now basically losing it, like he has infected her mind. And some how Floki is part of it. That whole plot line is interesting isn't it? I wonder what will unfold there.

There is a poem in one of the Edda's called the Song of Harbard. Harbard is a ferry man and Odin comes upon him. Odin needs to be ferried across the river and Harbard starts to inquire of him certain things. Then they begin to discuss their character and Harbard reports living in a dark place, making the most of it with women and wine and song and story. You get the sense he has a dark heart, that he is an energy sucker of sorts. I dunno, but he is bad news this guy!!
