Hobbies that cost more than playing bass

My pilot's license cost me around $4000 to get (including all of the flight training, plane rental, instructor fees, etc). Then, after I got my license, there was the continuous shelling out of money every time I flew. I could actually hear the sound of the dollars being sucked out of my wallet every time I was cleared for take off.

My Harley-Davidson cost me $17,000 (plus annual insurance and maintenance costs).

My boat cost $14,000 (plus annual insurance and maintenance costs).

My bass playing hobby is muuuuuuch less expensive.

My wife is 42 going on 20 and has a half sleeve and a bunch of others (I have a few). Makes it worse that one of our friends is a super popular Canadian tattoo shop owner.

Might actually be cheaper to start doing coke!:D

Bass playing as a hobby is not expensive. Plenty of examples of expensive hobbies are in this thread.

I've bought bespoke shotguns and rifles, collected Winchester M70s, gone on $10K hunting trips where I never pulled a trigger, drove sports cars, had custom suits made, been married three times, and much, much more.

Still, little compares to the expense of sailboats. That I never did.

Wow you guys are into some serious hobbies. Me , I'm constantly doing a remodel project somewhere in the house, which my wife loves cause it saves a lot of money. Right now I have a bathroom down to the studs getting ready to drywall and tile. I guess thats why she never hassles me when I get gear. She actually TOLD me to contact a luthier to have a high end 6 string bass built, and was with me and didn't blink last time I dropped 2 grand on an amp. I guess I'm lucky? Or I should start trying to get even more... Had my eye on a Jules Monique !!

I "went pro" more than 20 years ago so it's been a long time since it was a hobby, but I find that serious amateurs want to have the same gear as pros. A pro grade digital SLR starts at about $3000 and the top of the line models are in the $6000 - $9000 range. If you want to maintain your "state of the art" status they have to be replaced about every 3 years.

Lenses - same story. Figure $2000+ for fast pro zooms.

Then there's the lighting, tripods, cases, computers and software you need to go with it.

Bass playing is downright CHEAP by comparison.

Geez, a nice 8x10 or 11x14 camera with some lenses and the rest of the necessities are WAY cheaper (usually) and the image quality is far superior. :D

I have the experience to back it up, too. :bassist:

I have a pair of Ford Mustangs (one stock, other modified) that tend to thin out bank account when something breaks.

I knew you were, just replying in kind. I was involved at one point in time, (long ago) and glad that time is over.

As far as other hobbies, I agree that after the GAS has died down, bass is cheaper than many. This coming from someone who plays golf and skies (just a few times a year now) and owns a boat. If I stuck to just bass, I might have more bank, but maybe not as much fun, yes?
