I'm with you; that seems more than excessive. My 500/1 V62 weighs a mere 4 pounds and in the bullet case probably closer to 15 or 20 lbs. Maybe 40 lbs. tops when boxed but 53?? I've shipped Les Pauls that didn't even weigh that much!
I will say that the Cavern pup spacing is a very cool thing!
I saw that too. Lots of extra packing? GC says that they will not be available until 11/27/2010! Slow boat from Germany I guess.
I just got this yesterday. It is a prototype reissue HCT-185-SB Galaxy bass. So far I am impressed with it. My next one may be a Contemporary Club.

Just popped over to the Hofner Hounds forum for a quick peek. It is amazing to me how these instruments inspire such affection in the minds and hearts of their musician owners. Several of the members here are contributors there as well. For me there never seems to be quite enough Hofner.
Someone earlier in the thread owns a Hofner 500/1 vintage '58 limited edition. Anyone have experience with the late 50s reissues? The sound? How they feel?
It is a reissue so I would assume it was made in '09. I'm diggin' it. Great tone, well balanced and light.
