Hofner outselling Fender

Sure. Again, I was only referring to the fact that Hofner is outselling Fender on Reverb right now. What you are presenting is a red herring.

First Act outselling Fenders at TRU is a verifiable fact. Just like Hofner outselling Fender specifically on Reverb specifically today is a fact. You just managed to leave some parts out of your headline... which is sort of the definition of Red Herring: "something, especially a clue, that is or is intended to be misleading or distracting."

Personally, I really don't care who outsells who... In fact you could interpret one brand outselling someone else on Reverb as "people are trying to get rid of ______ brand".

I don't think that definition of a red herring is correct.

Anyway, my headline is meant to be provocative to draw eyes to the thread. It is not misleading, but instead incomplete. Your remark is a red herring, because it seems relevant and is a distraction, but it not relevant. I in no way asserted that Hofner is outselling Fender in general or through a variety of platforms. I referenced only Reverb. My assertion was about that site. We can talk about whether this has bigger implications for sales in general, which might be your point, but it was not my intention to get into that at all.

I just saw that Hofner has the number 2 selling bass on Reverb right now. Only Squier is selling more. As a Hofner fan I am quite happy about this, but I acknowledge it is just a blip and likely due to the new Beatles documentary. Nonetheless nice to see an underdog knock the champ around a bit.

PS. I know that some folks will point out that Squier is Fender. I will not enter that debate, but have at it!
Only Fender is selling more.

Also, you should check new or used.

If it's used, it means they aren't selling anything.

It also means, that nobody wants to keep them.

I literally cut and pasted that definition from the dictionary.

At this point I realize that either you are just trolling us, or you are so insecure in your love for Hofner that you feel the need to justify it with misleading statements.

Yeah, dictionaries are misleading. This is what I teach every year in my Spring logic course; as well as teaching informal fallacies such as red herring. Dictionaries offer 'reportive definitions,' or definitions that report how a community uses a term. Such definitions are usually very problematic and so we get students to focus on 'essentialist definitions,' or to try and identify the essential connotation aspects of a term. Anyway, the definition you grabbed was incorrect because it is too broad. A red herring is not just a misleading statement, but a misleading statement of a certain kind.

Also, I am not a troll. I am not sure why you are calling me names or ascribing to me positions I never asserted. I clearly indicate that Hofner is outselling Fender right now on Reverb. That is all. Everything else is of your own making in your own head.

I'm a big Reverb fan but until I see that Hofner is outselling Fender at Sweetwater, AMS, Zzounds, Guitar Center, Sam Ash, etc, etc, etc, it means nothing to me...and I'm not a Fender fan by any stretch of the imagination.
I think the reverb ratings are the closest thing we have but it’s definitely not perfect. But I do see listings on reverb all the time from big retailers. Zzounds, Sam ash, vintage king, Chicago music exchange, etc. so it does capture at least some of those “institutional” sales.

the real thing I see here is hofner sells a very limited number of models, fender sells like 100 different bass guitars between the different jazz and p and series and countries of origin and all that. Hofner may have a best seller, I don’t know that I would say they are “outselling” fender.

I think also there are so many Fender knock off brands (Not saying they are bad) at cheaper and higher quality then Fender models for same prices, (Not hating on Fender/Squier I love my Classic Vibe jazz bass!!!) I know there are also cheaper and knock off brands of Hofner but some Hofner entry models aren't bad for the price and like you said probably with the Get Back documentary pushing it.

Yeah, it is the entry level Hofner that is second right now on Reverb. It is basically the Squier version. It is just that Hofner puts their name on it. Likely not a bad idea, as they don't have the presence that fender does.
