Hofner outselling Fender

Screen Shot 2021-12-16 at 5.11.27 PM.png

Is this the list you're talking about?

I just saw that Hofner has the number 2 selling bass on Reverb right now.

Considering the amount of used gear Reverb is listing, about all that seems to suggest to me is that many of the current Hofner owners are unloading their Hofners.

If so, that’s Hardly a ringing endorsement for Hofner. ;)

But that’s cool. I might finally grab one - if the price is right. :)

I've been doing sound at a busy venue for over 6 years now. I don't see them being played in real word much, they show up very rarely. It's probably hobbyists buying them because of the beatles. Either, way I'm happy for Hofner it they're selling.

This point was mentioned already. The specific model that is being sold is a new model introduced earlier in the Fall. Some may be used now, but it is not a reference to all Hofners.

As busy as your venue is, it is not likely a representative sample. Also, I never denied lots of folks play other brands - especially Fender - which makes this notable. Finally does one need to reach a certain threshold, defined by you, to be a real player and not a hobbyist. Is a hobbyist not a bass player? There are professional bass players that use Hofners on the regular. They are easy enough to find if one takes an honest look.

Tina would have the biggest possibility but it still isn’t going to happen.:smug:

Ah! Ms. Tina Weymouth…

One cool lady! Ran into her a few years back at a Caravan of Thieves concert. She got asked to sit in for a couple of numbers. It was great seeing her up on stage again. A little older, a little wiser, and still as delightful as ever.

A busy music venue is indeed a representative of what professionals use in real world. It might not represent what sells the most (what hobbyists use). When did I say hobbyists are not real players? Of course there are professionals using Hofners and I didn't say otherwise, but they are rare. I think one should play whatever they like to play, not what everyone else plays.

Many good points, but I still disagree about your music venue - where ever it might be - as totally representative. The mere fact that it is located in a single place means it has a limited scope.

We can agree to disagree. The venue I'm working at is one of NYC's oldest music venues that's been open since '61. I used to mix 6-8 bands a night there before Covid. Now we have more like 3-4 bands a night. That's not the only venue I've worked at. I was a fulltime bass player for seven years, and have been a professional sound person for seventeen years now, and I'm not saying these to brag.

PS - I was calling BS on Reverb, not you personally. Hope that was clear, but sometimes nuances are lost in the medium of simple text. A lot of articles are written with ad placement (money paid) in mind.

I think the reverb ratings are the closest thing we have but it’s definitely not perfect. But I do see listings on reverb all the time from big retailers. Zzounds, Sam ash, vintage king, Chicago music exchange, etc. so it does capture at least some of those “institutional” sales.

the real thing I see here is hofner sells a very limited number of models, fender sells like 100 different bass guitars between the different jazz and p and series and countries of origin and all that. Hofner may have a best seller, I don’t know that I would say they are “outselling” fender.
I'd have a hard time believing they're outselling Gibson!
Okay, that might be pushing it, but though I can easily believe they might outsell Fender on a particular day or week, I seriously doubt it would ever go beyond that.
No matter how many Ignitions they sell, I'm guessing Hofner still isn't in the top 3...that's probably Ibanez, Fender/Squier and Musicman/Sterling.
Hell, they're probably not even in the top five.

Only Fender is selling more.

Also, you should check new or used.

If it's used, it means they aren't selling anything.

It also means, that nobody wants to keep them.

If I had a Hofner, and was thinking about selling it, now's a good time to do so.

Check that...maybe list it a month-or-two ago. Hofner owners may be thinking about selling while the "iron is hot".

I mentioned this a few times, but I'll do it again. It is not the used Hofners that are outselling the Fenders. It is a brand new model. So new Hofner models. You should get on the bandwagon before it's too late.
