Honest Feedback On My Tone Needed! MM Sterling

I had a sterling which had the most comfy and awesome neck. But I sold it because I could not eq away that zing and thought the low end on the bass was undefined, boomy and mostly delivered by the preamp.

In this clip, your tone sounds great. In my case, I had easier time getting similar tone from a jazz than a sterling.

What kind of amp were you using? How were u setting the on board pre? Just curious...thanks for chiming in!

SWR. I tried everything. Compression on/off. Mid cut/boost. Bypass entire amp EQ and fiddled with EQ on the bass. Tried Slinky strings, warwicks, Dr HI beams, etc. I even thought about changing the pups to Nordies.

I finally gave up because it was so much easier to get that big, fat, organic bottom from a jazz. Again, this is only my experience. There are people who sear by Sterlings. The guy who bought mine already had two.

I was finally able to listen to this on something besides my laptop speakers.

I definitely do NOT think it was too loud in the mix. It did not make it hard for me to hear any of the other instruments..

I really liked the tone. The only thing I wonder about is that it seemed like the volume dropped off whenever you went for the lower notes. In other words, it seemed like you were playing a lot on the root of whatever key you were playing in, and I could hear that and all the higher notes just fine. But, whenever you dropped down to any notes lower than that, I couldn't hear them as well. Not sure why that was. Maybe just that I'm still not listening to it on GOOD speakers. Just a fairly inexpensive component speaker setup for a PC.

I'd really like to hear how it sounds in Series mode, as well. For a song like that, I feel like I would like Series mode even better. But, maybe that would make it TOO midrangey/aggressive. I don't know. That's why I want to hear it.

In the end, for me, it just increased my jones about 10 times to hear my own Sterling in a band mix. I've had it for about 3 months now, but with moving across the country and all, I haven't had a chance to play it with anybody.

Thanks for the input! Maybe I'll try to do a vid of the same tune in series. It would be fun to compare! I thing Sterlings sound cool on their own, but, they really shine when you hear them sit in the mix with the band. I think a lot of good instruments are that way. Thanks again!
