Here's the thing. The more experience you have, the more you start to recognize how limited your abilities are.

When someone tells me they aren't that good but I know they've also been playing for a while, I tend to hope that they're still better than average. The average player thinks he's better than he is.

I dig it. A lot of great bands developed out of such half-assed circumstances. Peter Hook is on record saying he wrote his most interesting music when he couldn't tell a mixolydian from a mixmaster, while U2 have been quite forthright about their unique sound developing, initially anyway, out of a complete lack of talent. All I get from the ad is that buddy, like so many acts before him, isn't interested in jazz, fusion, prog, or technical death metal, but just wants to make some noise and see where it leads.

Seems there have been several well-known musicians or songwriters who pretty much worked from raw talent, not education.

I’m a half ass bass player with half ass equipment, looking for other half ass player to create some half ass music. I’ve played in pretty good bar bands. I’ve played in really good garage bands. I’m not looking for the drama or the egos that come with playing out. I just wanna have some fun

Then you're obviously not the target audience for the ad. No drama, no egos, just fun? Doesn't sound too bad to me.

I’m playing in a semi-pro band that has no drama, no egos, and is fun..... and we play out regularly and get paid. If working bands were a drag in the past I have to wonder if he’s the reason they were no fun.

There’s no reason working bands can’t be fun.... that’s an ad I’d walk away from. Gigging out for me is 75% of the fun and without that motivating everyone it wouldn’t be much fun.... for me anyway.

Totally get this ad, might be a bit of humour in it but sometimes playing in a gigging band just gets to be too much drama. The absolute most fun I have had playing is with a bunch of buddies on a Friday night with a ton of beer and other stuff.

Ha! Exactly. I could not seriously play with a musician whom refers to himself/herself as “half assed”. Beginner? Ok - because that implies there’s a goal to improve... but “half assed player with half assed gear”? Life is too short to waste time trying to make music with someone that is making an incomplete effort. I don’t care how much “fun” it is.

If you take it too serious you’re too old. The irony is this guy is probably a more solid player than half the people on this thread. Or more honest.

I’ve learned to always strive to play with people better than myself. Otherwise it’s a world of disappointments. Sounds like he’s looking for a no stress gig with low expectations. I’d much prefer hearing that up front rather than finds out the hard way. I just joined a band (first gig next Friday, wish me luck!) and they can’t seem to remember song endings, having played together for 2 years. What have I got myself into?!

Nah I’m not too old, Picker. I would’ve haf the exact same response when I was 17, or 27.

I get it music is a fun release for a lot of people, and that’s great. I find bicycling a lot fun and great release.

But for me, what’s most fun is actually playing to the best of my ability, and playing with folks who share the same goals and push each other. And making music that reaches some people in a positive way. Just different strokes for different folks, that is all.

I think the quirky craigslist ads are the way to go. It’s screens out people that are not going to fit and if somebody responds to the ad they’re probably going to enjoy the situation. I joined two bands with very strange ads because I like to play strange music and it worked out great. Plus any one that responds to that ad is a lot less likely to be disappointed than somebody that responds to the ad talking about an imminent world tour and record signings.
