Horrible Stock Colors

I was under the impression that Antigua actually started out as a grey-burst-like finish, like Jio said, and they turn that greenish color over time, much in the way old pelham blue instruments turn that fantastic shade of green.

tis' possible - but even your 'before' example looks better than the newer 'grey' version. It just looks better when it's a more tobacco brown/black burst than the paler ghost-looking grey version. IMHO of course ;)

This one?

More or less I guess, this is a more yellowed version than the pic in the book. It's a crappy shot of it, but it'll show the contrast. I realize Antiqua is not for everyone, but with all the different shades and versions, I feel some are better than others if you like the look. As in, I was disappointed by the reissue after seeing the late 60's versions. I'd do a custom bass in Antiqua if I could land this version successfully.

Never cared much for Fender's Wildwood finishes, but some folks love them.

Curious concept of injecting dye into a living tree to achieve this crazy look on the other side of the equation. Gotta' give someone credit for selling a wacky idea in the new CBS corporate environment of the day! (did Don Draper work for CBS/Fender perhaps? ;)) The experimental random nature of what came out makes these pretty unique. Some are more interesting than others but there aren't a lot of them out there to begin with.

Sahara Taupe...looks like someone took a dump on the bass..

Ha! Sahara Taupe is another one of those colours that can look really different in different situations. If left in the case since the early 80's when it appeared as an "International" colour (as it appears some would prefer) it looks tan & bland. If 'aged' by time (light & air) it takes on an golden/amber patina. (like this example) I tend to like these less than popular colours. (fewer of them too)

I love Antigua. Best color ever outside of graffiti yellow. I own the Jazz and P FSR Antigua's that came out several years back. No kidding, they are some of the best playing and sounding basses made and quite a bargain at their price point.

Took me years to come around to CAR and rosewood.

Sunburst/tobacco burst with tort gaurd. Theres a ton of people that like this combination. I don't see what they see I guess.
Funny enough sunburst and Olympic white are the only two colors I can stand with tort. Don't care for tort with anything else.
Oh and you can count me amongst the Antigua fan club.
As for colors I don't like, I can't abide Fiesta Red, or any of the pastel colors that Fender puts out like Shell Pink, Sonic Blue or Seafoam Green, that kinda thing.

This topic makes me want to buy an Antigua p-bass, put rounds on it, and not 'play for the song'!

Best post of the entire thread!!!

I really don't despise most colors or wood finishes. But I do not like the gold pick guards...they definitely ruin the look for me. I don't really care for white pick guards on most sunburst finishes either, though I can live with them. White looks ok with lighter burst ones like "cherry burst" but looks out of place to me on 2 tone, 3 tone, tobacco, antique burst and other such finishes.

I have to dis agree with most, i really like that antigua. Dont think ive noticed one in person but i like it in them pictures. I was also going to say the "space bass" that bootsy plays IMO is so ugly.
