I would do what I would have done.
Listened to a recording of the song and repeat it until the feel became second nature and I forgot thinking about it.
Don't use brainpower and concentration on counting when it can be of much better use for your actual playing.
Not to be disrespectful, or that I am neglecting the fact that learning how to read music actually can be a useful tool, but:
I might be a bit weird that way, but it is my humble opinion that music should be about listening and not reading.
If God would have wanted us to read music he would have equipped our eyes in such a way that they would have been capable of picking up sound waves.
As it is though that assignment was giving to our ears.
