How Do You Feel About This Ric Copy? MIJ Content...

I do have two questions though.
Is there any place I can get a blank truss rod cover without have to send one in or a tracing?
The original is missing, as you can see from the pictures.

Just out of curiousity, to all your Matsumoku bass owners, is it possible that the serial number '764291' would indicate the year anywhere in it?

Bumping to see if I can get these questions answered.
Thanks.

Hey,

I had one very similar for years. It also had no name plate but I understand from a older guy at the local music store it was a Matsumoku. He 'used to sell them back in the day'

It was a good bass... I thought I would regret selling it but it went for over twice what I was expecting on a local auction website (in New Zealand). No regrets as it got pulled out very rarely. Just long enough to appreciate how much i enjoyed playing the G&L ASAT.

Compared to the real Ric in the store it sounded similar but not quite there (just missed something...) and the real one felt a lot more solid for some reason. From memory the neck pocket on my copy was not the best.

I would buy one again, especially for $250 USD. I am sure you will enjoy it.

Matt

Dont be afraid at any way. I'd love to have anything that looks like Rickenbacker, but its almost impossible in my country, if you dont have money.

I'm not that poor, but right now I'm up to save for my own flat, rather than buying expensive bass. I could spend maximum amount of 100$ (with shipping) for that bass right now, what is impossible you know ...

I was planning to make my own Ric copy, but due to some work complications I'm just not so sure if I can make it this year, even I got most supplies.

Asking your question - I'd go for cutted plexi. Like I'm doing with my custom pickguards

Hey guys, I'm going to check this out today.
Thanks for all the replies.

Yes indeed, it was most likely made in 1977 (although 76 seems obvious given the first two numbers). Most Matsumoku guitar/bass serial numbers use only the first digit for the year with a few exceptions. I don't _think_ this is one of those exceptions.

And normally I wouldn't dredge up such an old post on the forum here ... but it's for a good reason.

This bass is sitting in my basement right now, it just arrived this morning. And I don't just mean another Matsumoku Ric copy, I mean this actual bass. For fun I googled the serial number and found it on here and sure enough, it's the same bass. I think it's been through one other owner in the interim (the guy I bought it from said he bought it here and I don't think it was that long ago).

looks like "long time" turned out to be 3 years or so...

Interesting how things get around. I was looking back at some of my really old threads and I just now saw your comment.
I hope that bass is serving you well! I didn't want to sell it, but needed the money at the time.
