How do you get banned from TalkBass?

HOW TO GET PERMANENTLY BANNED ON TALKBASS

1) Behave like a jerk who's determined to break the house rules.
2) Er... that's it.

Looking back at the list of banned users, I can't really see too many who'd be exempt from that description. You really do need to try hard to get permanently booted out from here.

After nearly ten years of being a TB member, I would have to say this is absolutely correct. The rules are broken all the time, sometimes out of ignorance, sometimes by members trying to push the boundaries. And nearly everytime, the offending post is edited or removed and the poster given a warning with the specific infraction spelled out.

Wise members heed the warnings - it's as simple as that. I received a few warnings in my first couple of years, and like most prudent TBers, declined to take a stand for my right to free speech (which is meaningless on a privately owned forum) or my right to be a jerk (which is really dumb) or just because I feel like arguing.

Accept the warning and move on.

Those who have been banned here are gone because they clearly demonstrated to the mods that they weren't at all interested in respecting other members, regardless of how many warnings they received.

I've had two infractions in my time here. My profile tells me that they were back in 2009 and 2010 and were for 'Rule #3 Violation: Off Limit Topics/Forum-specific Rule Violation'. I don't remember specifically what they were for, but I think that it was probably talking about religion/politics/the right to bear arms. I learnt my lesson and haven't had so much as a slap on the wrist since, no matter how many times I've been tempted to wade into the fray. I would imagine that consistent/serious rule-breaking is the easiest way of getting banned.

Is that "people" in general, or would it be riling up a specific person?

I think the latter would come under the purview of Rule #1. The first one is how trolling is generally described. In fact, I got my only infraction ever for 'trolling' for mentioning IB4TL at the end of a post of mine :p It was a controversial thread (a builder vs buyer sort of a thing). The comment was a general one - definitely not aimed at one specific person.

Showed this to wifey. She just shook her head and walked away, making that little sound she makes when she'd rather be sawing my head off with a dull butter knife. Thanks :D

Hmm, I got a temporary ban at some point for repeated trolling.

As far as I remember it was related to some political themed threat I created, where I made some rather sarcastic and ironic satirical comments on the U.S's political situation, based on a comment I read in some other thread.

Can't quite remember the exact topic though.

I've only banned a handful of dudes.
It was for constant disrespect, regardless of how many times they've been told.

But, our system also will hand out temp bans automatically if one reaches a number of points.

basically, don't be a turd.

I am still secretly petitioning for a "why were they banned" list...

;) :D

Some members that are gone were long time members that I never knew to get offensive or insulting. I'd like to think I missed the explosion but they were not banned for a single instance.

That list would break the first rule of fight club, and probably get the moderator who dared to post it tortured and killed.

Things happen at a whole nuther level down in the modatorium. At least that's how all of the legends go........

Hmmm....there's a member I'd like to have banned. Maybe I'll start a petition!

I'd sign that. I can also think of someone I'd prefer to see gone. But alas, we all don't get what we want.

Though it would never ever ever happen, it would be incredibly neat to see.
