I make my living out of this bass stuff - I do session stuff, jazz gigs, solo bass gigs, write for Guitarist magazine (was Bassist, now the two are combined), and teach, privately and at Drumtech/Basstech in London, as well as students from York University! It's great fun not having a 'straight' job, and I don't think I switch to doing just gigs even if I had the choice - the magazine work means I get to meet and hang with all my musical heros, the teaching is perhaps the most rewarding thing anyone can ever do, and the playing is more fun when it's not playing pubs 6 nights a week! My last 'big' gig was with Howard Jones...
cheers
