For a minute there I thought I had entered the International Council on the Integrity of English Grammar instead of TalkBass(is that one word or two, I'm not sure, I'd hate to start another enthralling argument), I only wish I hadn't wasted 10 minutes reading all the posts on the spellings of strap lock,,,, note:I agree with the non-compound version of this particular phrase... Let's "talk bass", hrrmmm one question,,I find my fretboard hand experiences cramping in the wrist when I'm playing low on the neck, down in the upper octaves, for a continuous period of time,,,, should i play my bass higher or lower to correct this or is something else a better solution?

Higher. I suppose you don't have any trouble with it when sitting down and playing, so try to wear your bass the same way standing up as you would sitting - i.e. at the tummy/chest region.

I voted chest. It seems like I play better with my bass high on my body. Especial slapping because I use the "thumbs up" attack and that is the only place I can wear my bass and still access all the strings with relative comfort.

PS - I don't think I have seen a thread this long in a while. this is cool.

This is the first time I've seen an 8 page long thread. It's been growing while I've been reading it. :) Anypoop, I play a wee bit above the waist area. It's comfy and it gives me the ability to my slapping while it doesn't make me look like a complete dork. Sometimes my left hand starts getting a bit numb when slapping to much and my right will get a numb if I'm picking, so I might need to find another position.
I had another thought, but I've been interrupted in my thinking process (which is not hard at all:)) so I guess I won't bother trying to capture it again.

Hmmm...
this thread's got me thinking now, about the placement of the waist...

I was under the impression that the waist is the thinnest part of the abdominal area, generally above the belly button, thus making it between the stomach/tummy and chest area.
Of course, I guess that also depends on how each person defines their stomach or tummy, but I changed my choice from 'waist' to 'hips' because...well, only the top horn of my bass is really at waist height. :D

Or should this be a different discussion in OT?
"How do you define your waist?" :p

I wear mine so it rests against my hip. This way I can move it about for dramatic effect if I want to. My manager says that if I wore it higher I'd be able to hear myself without turning up and drowning everyone else out (anyone else have that problem?)

Hey I'm a newbe to the talkbass forum and i just wanted to say thanx to everyone who contributed to this thread because it improved my playing ability quit a bit. I used to play with my bass hangin around my balls then after I read some of these posts I thought why not give it a try putting my bass up higher. Now that I did my hands and arms dont cramp and I find myself being a lot faster on the fret board. I am a changed man.

I voted knees 'cuz i like to hunker over when i play plus it looks cool. Idunno i guess thats just me. And regarding what rickbass said; thats a pretty shallow comment. I don't consider myself a poser. I play bass for the sheer joy of creating music and having fun (which is really all it should be about) not because i saw someone on mtv playin a bass that low. Of course I'm not saying there ARENT posers because there are a few here and there but lets not get into a heated "arument" over something trivial....

i agree fetis but i say balls and i mean balls. we're not from the fifties, we can relax a little. i mean i fill like crap playing with my baby choking me. just let 'em hang and let your head bang, that's what we want. we want someone to entertain us not put us to sleep and being a hard rock music lover i say rock out with your c*** out

Better yet, how about this topic is subjective? You're the one arguing with opinions... If you don't want to get into an argument with someone, don't hold a debate over subjective things. It is, what in large starts flame-wars.

Enter Mr. Smarty pants
Mr. Smarty pants:
I believe what you MEAN to say here, is, "Of course, I'm not saying there AREN'T posers, because there are a few here and there. But let's not get into a heated "argument" over something trivial..."

Mr. Smarty pants sits down, sipping his root beer

hey
hehehe balls, the low riding style. hehehe
so the picking arm is nearly or fully outstreched so i just flick my wrist to play(i use a pick). good for when your bashing the top string cause you can mute the rest and just bash away.
most punk bands have theirs there and it looks good.
anyway later
Luke
