I got my first bass in 1976 it was a 1968 Gibson EB 2 Hollowbody I kept it for a year and traded it for a brandy new Fender Jazz wich I dont have anymore either. I do own a 77 jazz now though same color and frettboard as my original.

I bought a Silvertone bass from Sears in 1965. Kept it for a year. Horrible instrument! Would go out of tune after one song.
The first bass I played regularly was owned by my high school, an old Gibson EB-0(?), SG body with the big honkin' pickup at the neck, and short scale. I played the heck outta thing, although it sounded muddier than the big Mo.
I still have my first bass (Bought it in 6/1999), the one and only Squier P-Bass! Yes the crappiest one of all! hehe 
blah.. I play it from time to time, like if i don't wanna take out my Salas to play etc.. hehe -=)

My first bass was a used Vantage. I had it for three years and traded it in on a new Fender Precision Lyte.
I had a cheap Samick (is there any other kind?) for about a year before moving up to my Ibanez EDC700 which gets a lot of flack on this site, but anyway I like it (as a quick defense, the thin neck is great, easy access to upper frets, great playability, good tone, stays in tune, less warping). Thinking about adding a fretless now...
In my case I wanted to be sure I wanted to keep playing bass before moving up, since i started playing because my brother and sister asked me to so we could form a band. Plus the money situation dictates timing. But you probably should keep your first bass instead of trading or selling, cuz you most likely won't get much for it, and then you have a backup too. I almost wish i still had the Samick, only got 50 bones trade in for it. but anyway...

I had my Vox Delta IV for about 28 years. I washed a lot of dishes/pots & pans to get it. I could still get it back; As If!
It says "Fretsling" on it. That's all I know. I got it for free from a guitarist who's mom's boyfriend gave him a box of old 60's guitar stuff, including an old MuTron Phasor type pedal, the one with the red, yellow, and blue buttons! Anyway, he gave me the strap, complete with stains. It is comfy. It's cut in a very slight "S" curve shape instead of being straight like all the modern straps, and it's really thick leather. Weird and ugly, but comfy.

I had my first electric bass for eight years, from around age 14 to about 22, a Crown, Japanese import w/one pickup and no side dots. And the original Thudmaster Flatwounds, of course.
This was in the dark ages of electric bass (1964) and it probably cost around $70. It actually didn't sound too bad as compared to the other choices of that period, but I was glad to upgrade to a Fender fretless precision. However, I got a lot of miles and made a lot of bread with that old bass, and don't feel like I was deprived.

I got my first in 1975. It was a Teisco. I think the model was "crap-0-jazz" or something like that. It had a plywood neck - literally! The neck was made of about 50 layers of some light wood. The neck looked sorta neat but it had the tone of balsa and was about as easy to play as stringin' a garden hose between two trees.

I still have my first bass, a '98 Dano Longhorn reissue. It cost me a blue Squier Standard Strat and $75 at a guitar show. I think I had it for a year before I got my used (and abused) MIA Fender Precision for $375. My Dano does have some problems though, the wire is loose when in inserted and it pops everytime I move. My teacher said it needed to be resodered in the input area, but otherwise I like it (though most don't).
I had my first bass (Aria 4) for just over a year. That was when I got my first 5-string (Carvin LB-75). I will probably never play a 4 again. I ended up giving away my Aria.
My first bass was a p-copy from a company called Masada. I got it for $35 dollars in '92. Someone had removed the truss rod and I still swear the fretboard was plastic. I had it for one year before it warped into a vague pretzel shape and became useless. I still have the twisted remains.

And, then, I took a powersander to it (I was 14, what do you want?), and then it was blue. And, then, green. And, then, Flourescent Orange with blue racing stripes. The last paintjob was a marbled green with the faux white veins. I gave the bass to Greg Curbow to add a Kahler tremolo,Warmoth telebass neck and a Bartolini pickup. I eventually stripped all of the parts off of it, and the body disappeared into the black hole that is Curbow's labratory. The rest was sold off (except for the kahler, which I currently have sitting on a frankenbass Yamaha piccolo bass).
I guess I had that bass for about 4 years. But, it only stayed original for about a year. Decent bass--it kept me interested enough to stick with it.
On a side note, I still have the Roland Cube keyboard amp that I got with the keyboard that I traded for the bass....

My first bass was a Samick rental, had it for 3 months. Bought my beautiful 79 Ric 4001 last February (for $300, woo hoo!!). I don't think I'll be parting with it.
I've been playing for about 5 months. Still got my bass, a white Fender P-Bass. It's pretty good. Is either Ibanez or Washburn any good? (just wondering). Also I have heard people saying that Squier is crappy. Why is that so?
My first was pieced together out of parts my brother had in 74. Short scale w/ a guitar pup and a unadjustable bridge with a wooden string saddle (like and acoustic kinda). I still have it. I put it back together for my 5 year old to play. I recently got a bridge, pups and tuners from a friend that I'll try to upgrade it with.
No.. they aren't that great.. If you want a good "bang for the buck" go with Carvins.. They are terrific basses for the $

My first bass was a karera J-bass that I got from e-bay for about $100. It was black and REALLY light. I had it for about a year and never played it at all just cause it didn't feel god at all so i sold it to a friend and bought a Fender MIM J-bass. This is what I have right now and it rocks! I'll probably have this for a few years or until I really learn how to play.
