How long has it been since you last broke a string?

Last one was probably about 10 years ago … and there was one a couple years before that … both were GHS Flats that were used on other basses, and broke when re-stringing, and both G strings … after that I never 'recycled' GHS Flats … only bass strings I ever had break in almost 50 years ...

Nothing since last summer, but I've broken several bass strings over the years. When I was playing guitar all the time, I'd break a string every month or so. I think sweat is one of the culprits; also, worn saddles (especially with burrs), aggressive pick use, and palm muting.

When I first started I would break strings all the time... as a kid I had heavy handed slap technique and used it too often, but I moreso think it was that I bought the cheapest Ernie ball strings I could afford.

Full disclosure, I broke a string a couple years ago but it was a high F (a d g c f) on a 35 scale, which was more just bad planning and probably a bad choice of gauge and scale.
Other than that it’s been probably 10+ years since I broke a string.

My new Ibby SR800 during practice. All of a sudden, the D untunes. I try to retune it... and I can't. Look over to see the string unwinding from the bridge end. Switched with a bass from the wall and continued practice.

I emailed Sweetwater, who sold me the bass; they suggested that Ibanez would consider it normal wear (I had the bass for about two months). I bought a pack of Elixirs and replaced the string.

Does that count?

I've broken three in almost 50 years. My first one was when someone handed me an electronic tuner in the late 70's. I didn't know how to use it so you can guess the rest. The last was at a gig around the year 2000. The BL lived a mile away and sent his wife to fetch a cheapo bass for me to use the rest of the evening. I've always carried extra strings since then but haven't needed any since.
