How many basses do you own, total?

I play guitar and bass and have owned better than 50 bass's not counting the junker bass in the basement I have 5 next week maybe 4 maybe 10 who knows.I gig pretty regular and own a black cherry hofner a green hofner a black jazz a sunburst Ibanez Iceman and a red LTD EC254(looks like a Les Paul)the dude that mentioned the shoes to woman in one of these threads nailed it.If you are a family man on a budget barter if you dont work regular your woman is correct if you really must have(providing it is a steal) I use wife over ride and get it.I am lucky my wife is taking bass lessons so good luck

I "only" have 5 too, and have been playing bass for 20 years.

There are lots of bassists around the world who would love to have one decent bass, or a decent bass and one backup.

When did FIVE become "only" five, and more appropriate for a beginner?

I've played guitar for 25+ years and have owned up to 27 at one time. GAS done got me good, looking for a variety of sounds from a Strat to a jumbo acoustic. I've never owned two of the same kind at a time. But, that was back when I had money. When I started getting serious about playing bass (about two years ago), I sold a few guitars, started with an SX jazz bass to practice on, then got a Jay Turser violin bass for the Beatle sound, a Squier CV 50's Precision for variety (and I think it looks cool), Rogue fretless to try my hand at playing one, and finally a Fender MIM Standard Precision that I think is the bass that suits me best. I still consider myself a beginner, as I don't think I have the chops to hold a supporting role in a band, yet.
It's the same principle as the guitars. No two are the same, and I can get all the sounds I like from what I have.:cool:
None of these are terribly expensive, giving me a chance to try out a number of options in order to find the sounds I'm looking for. Going through "only" five to find the sound I really like (Precision) is pretty good for me.;)

I have three
A Godin A5 fretted;
a Lakland 55-02 Dlx;
a 2008 or /09 Fender American Standard Precision V

IN about a year and a half or two years, I'll have reached my Sadoswky fund goal, then I'll have another bass. After that, I may add a fretless, btu then I think I've got every sound covered that I could conceive of needing at this stage in my life.

3 and i have played over 6 years.

1.) my beat to hell pawn shop dean, my first bass i dont play it anymore, just for sentimental so i dont think it really "counts".
2.) My modded classic vibe 60's P bass i have under 300$ into , but i am trying to sell.
3.) A parts P bass that , all fender parts/warmoth body 62 style,


Oh i have a plywood les paul guitar i got at a pawn shop for 90$ , Austin brand. I will probably sell it as i never play it.

Basses I love

78 Guild B-302 Woody, Rich like an AVO cigar
82 Steinberger L2 - Punchy mids, fast neck, easy to travel with
82 Peavey T-40- versatile tone with nice range of sounds for a passive thanks to the unique electronics
Yamaha TRB 5PII - Great sustain, crisp highs, solid "B", sweet neck, love the piezo pups....fantastic
Ibanez BTB 1305e - sustain like a Steinway baby-Grand, fast neck, fat tone
Peavey Cirrus 6 - Thunderous B string, super flat action, amazing tone, bright highs..what any bass should aspire to sound like.
Rickenbacker 4003 2011-Just bought and have not seen or played yet..4 weeks till I get to the US to pick up

Basses I like

Gregg Bennett Remington semi-hollow - Rice, woody tone, superb electronics when not playing with wireless, action a bit high...lightweight
ERGO EUB 6 - well made, nice punch and "uprighty" tone, but "c" is a bit (really) tight and "neck" is very fat, action a bit tall, and stand/mounting scheme are underwhelming. Before any of you Jesse Worshipping _-holes start whining about how "you can make a lower bridge, or get lighter strings, or do a stand-mod". Set of strings is North of $200, stand should not wobble out of the box and mod. is not free, delivery was four(4) months... So shut your pie hole.
MTD-KZ6 fretless - sweet action, beautiful tone, adequate MWAH....the only downside is I suck worse at fretless than fretted (hey..just being honest)

Basses I would like to sell or use as firewood

Waterstone fretless - Bought on flea-bay from the manufacturer. Three way switch non-functional, hardware is crap, de-fretted with wood tearing, fret slots filled with some sort of bullcrap putty, faceplate over drilled, and holes stuffed with solder to help screws grab....crap wiring, and soldering...cheap Chinese schlock. Only bought it because it looked remarkably like my Guild 302 I bought from Oakland Music in New Jersey 34 years ago. The only similarity is that they have is shape.
Traben Obsession 5 - what can I say. Not a horrible bass, but fretwork is ordinary, high eq is very hissy. Better not to bid on E-Bay after a party.....

The Ibanez basses I will eventually sell because I want to go to all Music Man basses but I'm in no hurry for doing that. I then eventually want to add at least one model of every Music Man bass that there is so basically, a Big Al, a Reflex and a Game Changer.
