How many gigs did YOU play last year?

According to my ledger, I received taxable pay for 28 jobs in 2019. I had to hang it up in September for health reasons. It would have been 35 had I been able to play out the year.

Doesn't help that our guitar player moved to Atlanta (we're in Austin). We'd replace him, but he's moving back, and we're a really tight group. We basically only play the bigger gigs that we want to play, and he flies in. Should pick up when he moves back this summer (fingers crossed)!

Way down this year: 45 with my stinky little bar band, 1 with Country singer Jim-Joe Greedy*. I think Redhead will get back to our usual 60+ this year; we already have 28 dates booked.

I also made about two dozen appearances at my BL's Tuesday night open mic. They don't count because I do those out of the goodness of my heart, and usually play only about half a set.

Only 11 gigs in 2019; way down from 2018 for a few reasons. We've had some band member turnover, day job and personal demands on time, yada yada. I'm ok with that number though. I have one tonight which was unexpected, but overall I expect 2020 to also be fairly slow compared to previous years.

I finally joined my first gigging band in June and the plan was to play out about once a month. Our first gig was in August and we played out five times through November before taking off gigs in December and January. So we did about as planned. We're planning to play about 15-20 gigs this year.

I also played in two weekly jam sessions through June of last year, when I quit one of them in order to devote time to my band (I'm still playing in the other jam). I played a total of about 70 times with those two groups in 2019. They obviously weren't gigs, but I did play a lot.

First off, Church Gigs Count! Why wouldn't they? I don't think the definition of a "gig" should be paying only.
Playing live, for people (LOL we've all had a couple of those that we thought would count but now don't LOL), is all I was thinking.
Coffee shops, solo, dive bars, 12,000 seat arenas, weddings, worship......you get the idea.

busiest year I've ever had

These days I usually average about a gig every two or three weeks, but 2019 was a bust only nine shows. Got up to six before having a cycling accident and seriously damaging my right shoulder. After a couple of months, when the pain had subsided some, I managed another three before my orthopedic surgeon told me to stop. Eventually had surgery, spent five weeks in a sling, and just started playing again last week.

I might have a busier year in 2020 as, in addition to my regular covers band, I'm auditioning for a small group with a female vocalist doing cabaret/torch songs. I'm not a huge fan of the music, but it'd be regular money.

Between moving, taking care of my 2yo and working a lot I had next to no time for music.
