MXR M82 is a pretty cool envelope filter. Just picked one up about a month or so ago and love it. I agree with you though, the more I look for new pedals, the more I keep coming full circle back to MXR.

I remember seeing the guy who used to play bass for JD Simo using one of these-he had a massive pedalboard. Wish I could find one to try out!
I think it looks cool when you have pedals from the same company lined up together. Unfortunately for me I prefer the OC2 to the BOD. And I am addicted to envelope filters so while I have the MXR BEF, I have like 12 other EFs as well. I have 4 on my PT pro: MXR BEF, Manta, Xero Dlx v2, and TruTron 3x. I really like having a different EF sound each time I use one during the night, and some are for simple use, alone or with just mild OD going into them, and some are for synth emulation use with an octaver, OD or fuzz and detuned chorus going in.
Good news! The audience at your next gig wont be filled with TBers! Line up the MXRs
I don't have all MXR on my board, but dang, they're really hitting it out of the park with a lot of their pedals, so my board has a lot of MXR.
I know you are right, and I agree with everyone here, when saying; if it works, it works.
Sound is most important, and playability, and feel. We know what we like to hear.
But still.
I like to look at my gear. And I want it to look good in my eyes.
And I like touching it.
Problem is not about what others may think. I really don't care what others think of my gear as long as it works for me.
I get it! The only person looking at the board is the most important.
If we all didn't care about looks then we'd all be rocking tort pickguards or something.
(I kid, i kid... sort of. cue foggy mountain breakdown chase scene)

That inverted triangle layout for the knobs is what usually gets used for some type of tremolo box.

Tim Lefebvre also uses one.
They don't pop up very often, being they're so old. I've only seen one or two here on TB and I jumped on it as soon as I could. It's really beat up, most of the MXR and almost all of envelope filter is worn off but it's still the best filter I've ever tried.
They pop up on Reverb quite often though.
It's not the most popular filter out there, but I love MXR's Bass Auto Q.
It's pretty cool, has an additional function in the shimmer/autowah-LFO, AND it doesn't look like every other (small-box) MXR...
I'll also add that the Phase 90 and later the Phase 100 were mainstays of my stage setup for a long time.
Nothing wrong with MXR at all. They make great stuff. I'm not a big fan of their BEF after trying it out, but if that's what you like, go for it!
Even more bizarre are the people who only buy pedals with soft switches because they can hear the click.
Does the appearance of your pedalboard concern you that much. If it sounds good who cares
