I used a synth pedal for a bit, then sold it. I mostly play direct into the amp these days, though I mess around with a volume pedal on occasion.

my tube head sounds kinda poopy with most pedals, that's why i'm just using a moog mf drive and leaving the pedal boards to the guitarists

Disclaimer: My pedal board is 4X8 - feet. Just don't use it much. Too much walking!

I never used pedals until the past few years, when I bought a little compressor to even out the sound of my Sterling a bit. When my Jazz came, I tossed that pedal into my gig bag because the Jazz needs absolutely no help in that department. I've thought about adding effects but I don't really play anything that really screams for them. I might decide to add some signal processing at some point but that's about it. We old people got along just fine for years plugging straight in.

You hit the nail on the head. I did exactly the same thing I did.. paid $70 bucks for a compressor pedal thinking I was going to get some lower octave sounds out of it but ended up returned it.. no great whoop!. My guitar player has over a dozen in his floor case and about 5 laying around the outside of it, no room in the box. I rather just plug in and play bass. Thanks for your reply.

Yep, pretty much agree with you there...

Though I do run through a tuner then compressor all the time these days.

I went through the pedalboard phase back in the 80's and 90's where I went through a tuner, chorus, flanger, EQ, octave and compressor. But now I just don't see the point.

I tend to find that tuning is easier without effects switched on.

I just use a headstock tuner these days. Keeps the signal chain cleaner. It's not as accurate or quite as convenient on the fly, but my ear is good enough if things go wonky midstream.

I agree that there is nothing wrong with not using pedals. I don’t use them myself. I’m just mature enough not to think i’m Special because I don’t use them. I guess we read them differently.
