In my day we didn't have no fancy interwebs and youtube, we learned our bass parts by listening to 33 1/3 long playing record albums, picking up the tone arm ( look it up kids) over and over to hear the part we couldn't quite figure out so we just kept doing it over and over till we did figure it out or till there was a scratch in the record that made it skip and we had to buy a new one and listen to that one over and over and over till that one wore out so we just gave up and took those records to Keg parties and.................................... what were we talking about again ?

I’m a dinosaur as well. I have one tuner, and an Eden WTDI direct box that I use at church. As for fuzz boxes, we didn’t need them. We just cranked up our tube baby’s until the speakers blew...Heck, we invented “Fuzz”....

. Dag blame kids today, playing those class D amps through neo cabs and wondering why their stuff sound like crap. When I was touring, my rig weighed as much as a Volkswagen, and we were playing one night stands, with no roadies...

Back then I think 'Fuzz' meant the bits of paper speaker cone floating in the air once 'proper' volume levels were attained...

Ha Ha .. I remember the tone arm.. and when the needle would wear out and it started skipping groves, I would put a nickel on it as a weight. ;)

I often don't use pedals at all, but other times I do--it depends on the setting, the songs & my mood as well.

Pedals can be fun, but also useful.

When I play at church I often play without other effects, but I do use a volume pedal every time--if only to turn down my sound between songs--it is easier than using the volume knob--as it is quicker for me.

But sometimes I do volume swells, maybe just if I come in after the song starts--on some songs it sounds cool to have that first note fade in.
Sometimes I do more of them--on certain songs it adds to the feel, especially if we don't have a keyboard that Sunday.

If, like last time I played, it is just myself & an acoustic guitar (Plus vocalists)--i often use an octave pedal & chorus to fill out the sound--and it sounds great.

Sometimes it 's just a chorus, no octave pedal.

And when I do hat we always get some good comments about the sound.

But often it's just the volume pedal--it depends on the song though.

Well, I just used a pedal for the first time in years on a gig. Brought a newly purchased Echolution out to a gig and used it in some of the spacey instrumentals we do.

It really added a lot I think. I played less notes using it, but the delay filled things out nicely and added some atmosphere that had been lacking in those spaces before.

And we had to hitchhike between gigs... in the snow.
