I would use any effect plug-in on earth on a track. But when I try to use them with a rig, in real time, I feel like THIS guy.
Pedal boards always make me think THIS, and I suspect that to be part of the latent reason men like them.

You totally misunderstood my post. I hang in the "Humor and Bass Gigs" section because I have TB friends here and we are always joking around hence the word 'Humor". I recently saw a picture of about a half dozen stomp boxes used for bass. I was asking a legitimate question that I couldn't understand how you need them for playing bass and lots of people responded including yourself. However, the others responded in a friendly informative manner why or why not they use them. I admit to being a 'Dinosaur" and I was making fun at myself because I'm not hip on all the pedals out there and thanks to the people who responded, I am much more informed. I still wont use a pedal because I'm too damn lazy to hook them up, one cable for me is enough. Don't think for a minute that I feel 'Special" because I don't use a pedal. That's not the case.

Well, you DID publish in the HUMOR section. So I'm trying to rise to the occasion. Lively if contentious thread!
And I do wish I was more physically coordinated, such that I could tap dance AND pluck -- but I get tunnel vision in the heat of battle and thus fare best by keeping it super simple.
And yes, there are a lot of great bands that use bass pedals at the core of their sound. There was a local group called Muse in Los Angeles in the late 80's and the bassist changed up every song with a different key effect, and it was pretty glorious.

Delay is nice, if maybe a bit predictable, in an atmospheric floaty fretless bass solo (sorry I did indeed use the "S" word there

A nice aggressive square wave fuzz can let guitarists know that you can shred on bass and cut through the mix just as well as they can.
Oh and compression, which isn't really an effect, can compensate for my sloppy technique!
My first and only box was compression and I didn't notice anything special. I was looking for a lower octave as they stated in the brochure but I was just not really satisfied. Bought a class D amp that had compression controls build in but again no great whoop... As of this moment I am pedal free. In my case, I used pedals to try to find the sound I wanted. A compressor, a few different drives, a delay, none of them really got me there. Then I got a P bass, plugged it straight into a Rumble and there it was. My old bass is for sale now.
Maybe not a dinosaur but probably a portable cassette player or better yet a b/w television.
One advantage is that its cheaper that you don't use any because if you find one you absolutely love others may soon follow and then the quest begins for others. That's what happened to me anyway.

Effects, no. Pedals, sometimes - compressor, equalizer, etc are not really effects but some good ones come in pedal form.
I'm a dinosaur too.
I had a friend that built a functioning tape echo machine out of stuff he scrounged up from around the house, I think he was maybe 16 or 17 at the time. Went over to his house one morning and he had all this stuff layed out on the floor with tape looping around it , says check this out..........the dang thing worked pretty good to. We couldn't afford to go down to the store to buy one so he just figured it out from a popular mechanics magazine or something.

my tone is my pedalboard ...
This is what I am currently using for effects.
1 - First I run into an equalizer
2 - Then I split the signal into 4 parallel signals with a rolls mixer.
3 - I run one of the parallel lines into the Line6 bass pod where I model an acoustic 360 with a rat or big muff distortion pedal. I use this to get a retro growlly distorted sound. Or I also model an Ampeg fliptop with the Rat Distortion pedal. And I also Model an old Marshall amp. With the bass pod I can get a wide range of clean or dirty sounds and various effects and model different amps and speaker cabinets.
4 - The second parallel signal goes into a MXR bass di+. I use this pedal to get a clean modern sound. It also has a distortion button that can give a moderate to extreme amount of modern distortion.
5 - The third parallel signal goes into a Marshall Guv'nor. This gives me an old 60s marshall stack sound. This can go from a small amount of distortion to an over the top marshall sound. This effect can give you a the classic Jack Bruce Cream tone.
6 - The fourth parallel signal goes into a Tech21 VT Bass pedal. With this effect I get a slightly dirty Ampeg SVT bass amp sound with a tube like growl.
7 - Then I remix the 4 signals back together and run it into a bass amp, or pa, or studio mixer. Because the signals are parallel I can mix clean and overdriven sounds together and still get effect and a sound that punches through the mix.

I admire many bassists who use effects heavily, like Doug Wimbish, for example. I keep a distortion pedal around just in case. But if I can avoid hooking it up, I will. A long-time band I was in played "Sabotage" by the Beastie Boys. Try that one with no effects!!!
