Been playin' since the sixties and have tried pedals many times across the years but only the tuner persists. It's a combo plate of reasons: a) the music I play doesn't generally call for effects; b) when I play outside a studio the effect of the effect is lost in all the rest of what's going on (noisy bar, loud party, picnic ground, auto race, et al.) so no one, band or audience, notices whether I'm using one or not but if it was important to me to hear it I'd use it; c) I appreciate the simplicity of a good, passive bass a good cable (a spare is in the bag) and a good amp, less to haul and set up, fewer knobs, batteries and wall warts to mess with; d) real estate on stage is often at a premium so omitting a pedalboard has a non-sound-related benefit; e) I'm playing the rig I want to play with good results, happy bandmates and happy audience. That last point alone is enough for me!

I was asking a legitimate question that I couldn't understand how you need them for playing bass and lots of people responded including yourself. However, the others responded in a friendly informative manner why or why not they use them. I admit to being a 'Dinosaur" and I was making fun at myself because I'm not hip on all the pedals out there and thanks to the people who responded, I am much more informed. I still wont use a pedal because I'm too damn lazy to hook them up, one cable for me is enough. Don't think for a minute that I feel 'Special" because I don't use a pedal. That's not the case.

My apologies to you then. There are so many people who actually believe what you posted and they post it outside of the effects to get around the effects bashing rule that it's hard to tell when someone is joking. It's pretty apparent by some of the responses that I wasn't the only one who took you seriously.

You see the problem here is, my dear Charles, that I believe that the very essence of your argument is fatally flawed....

I do not believe that this thread was intended to be "deliberately divisive to stir things up"....

I believe that it was intended to be a light hearted thread intended to do nothing other than to entertain....

Ignoring you is not going to happen....I'm simply going to wish you a more joyful and positive mind set for the rest of your days on this earth.....

I won't apologize to the people who took this seriously, and used it as an excuse to give a jab to pedal users though.

In some bands I agree with you and have no pedals. Other require them. In my case, the originals Rock trio requires overdrives in order to get the saturation I need at a reasonable volume. Different songs require different levels, so I have 3 different overdrives and a preamp. When i sub in the Country band, it's bass to amp with nothing in between.

Interested in the Drop. Read a TB thread on these gadgets and conclusion was the Drop is pick of the litter but still has noticeable latency and coloration. Have you gigged it enough to say whether that's overlookable?

So you're a bird?

It really depends on what you're doing.

My board goes tuner -> Korg Miku -> EHX Ravish Sitar -> Dunwich custom fuzz -> Morley wah -> EHX delay -> EHX reverb

I use the wah most often, as I often use it to make fills stand out more. The Miku is for noise, the Ravish Sitar is for filling out twangy bits, and the fuzz is for getting louder and more distorted. The delay and reverb are for echoes.

It's kind of a misconception that old school bassists didn't use effects. Many absolutely did.

like a red leather codpiece in the 80's...then NEVER again! ;)

IMO, it colors the sound slightly, sounds slightly "synthy" I can tell a difference, BUT, I only use it 1/2 step down, I think the lower you go, it sounds obviously more processed, being it is lower frequency to begin with. I think it tracks pretty good. We do 4 tunes, that are tuned down 1/2 step. To me the pedal is a keeper.
