I signed up for one of those programs that keeps you up to date on the happenings of your class. A few years back I got an email saying, "Hey, look at these fotos from this year's reunion."

I looked through the fotos, didn't recognize any of the middle aged folks and thought this couldn't possibly be my class...most everyone looked really old. Then I recognized a few friends.

Sad, sad, sad.

Maybe it was a "Bring Your Parents" reunion?

I've quit FB twice - once in disgust at the "mirage of reality" posts that people are apt do. I had gone full boil on FB first time around and then quit it cold turkey. Got back on FB while in Afghanistan to keep in contact with a few select people. After getting back home and only barely realizing it , my network grew to what it had been before, all with the same "mirage of reality" crap. Quit it again. Got back on a while later on for family reasons with extremely limited network (immediate family for the most part) and also to have an account to establish a band page. Even then, I block 90% of people's comments that get posted to my wall or newsfeed or whatever it is. Instead of being an infuriating intrusion into my life, it's now just a benign tool.

Also like Aaron Von Rock says, I also use it to follow some cool stuff: bands, a local visual history page and the like...

I liked Facebook when I had it but I left it because I got sick & tired of all the political crap. That was before I knew you could filter that garbage out. But I don't miss Facebook and I don't intend to sign up again any time soon.

Political crap right now is the worst of FB.

Between that and baitclick Facebook is nearly unusable. All people do is complain about intimate details of their lives that Facebook friends should never know about. If you just read peoples' posts it would seem 90% of your friends are suicidal, and the other 10% have already committed Facebook suicide. They're the ones that post the cryptic garbage like, " F-it I quit" "bye" they a week later they post a pic of them smiling with a family member.

Some of y'all sound like you have some weird Facebook friends... I've found Facebook to be very useful for getting the band name out there and it's what helps my band get most of it's gigs. People can look up your page, see your videos, pictures, etc. and then contact you to play shows. I've seen several interesting articles and caught up with old friends on there as well. Just this last week I met up with a friend I hadnt seen in a decade because I saw him on Facebook and started communicating with him (inviting him to our show). I just saw that episode of Black Mirror, Nosedive, yesterday and it really makes you think (and feel disgusted) about how fake people can be on social media. Everything in moderation and definitely YMMV.

I really like Facebook most of the time. I've made some great music contacts through it. My main band I'm in now is because I got back in contact with guys I knew from my college Jazz Band days. Yeah a lot of the stuff is annoying - especially now with the elections and everybody spouting armchair opinions but I really do still like it.

I agree that facebook has gone really downhill in recent years. Nothing left but piles and piles of dumb memes, even dumber buzzfeed articles, and political ads. The place used to be a great tool for keeping up with distant friends. IMO, it started going to crap when FB implemented their "feed" algorithm rather than a wall of the most recent updates from pages you follow.

Ironically, the thing I enjoy most about it right now are the "group" pages centered around specific interests.... which when it comes down to it, is basically just a forum. Facebook has come full circle in terms of internet architecture.

Certainly one of it's best features. I have nearly all of my friends posts hidden, and only car and music related stuff comes through my feed, mostly from groups or magazines. Your parallel between FB and forums is spot on. People keep trying to reinvent the wheel but trends eventually die out. Forums aren't going away soon, but the "new social media site" will one day wipe Facebook from existence, just like Myspace.

Black Mirror is an awesome series. The next two are great, as well.

Facebook should be used as a tool, for bands, musicians and interest groups. You lost track of friends probably because you didn't have much in common anyhow. I get much information from a local tri state gardening group (what is this bug, best compost, etc..). I use Facebook for band advertisement and when I'm looking for something to do over the weekend. Quite frankly I have stopped following most everyone's personal threads, in particular, this political season, and I haven't missed it or looked back. Control the machine, don't let the machine control you. Never let Facebook make you feel that you have to befriend, quote, or comment.
