I don't much like facebook

I just deactivated my account. All i want is to see what people are up to. Not possible. Too much utter garbage.
I've always been very selective about who I let in my circle, unlike a lot of people that friend everyone & anyone, I have a tight group of family and friends, if you post annoying things or are a share maniac I'll take you off my feed, my friends and I use it for stupidity for the most part, I rarely do or say anything serious or real on it
Facebook is what you make it. I have relatively few "friends" but the ones I have are old and/or current friends and relatives. The sites that pop up on mine are stuff I'm interested in...guitars, amps, electronics, and my brand of politics. It is whatever you choose it to be.
As for being old...I'm almost 64, wracked with arthritis and other problems, but am happier than I've ever been. I'm married to my very first girlfriend, from 7th grade, Catholic Grade school. She called me out of the blue after 42 years, and we've been together 10 years now...and haven't had our first fight. So what if we're old.
I've re-friended a couple old girlfriends...not in any romantic way, and it's been great. They were good friends many decades ago, and it's been fun to see where life took them. (All are happily married as am I and I know their husbands as well. It's all good.)
Things sag, skin wrinkles...beauty is fleeting. I once had thick hair and could run 15 miles a day. Now I walk with a cane, need two new knees, a new hip, shoulder surgery (both shoulders) and had my neck fused...and that's just the joint problems.
Who cares? It happens to all of us, unless we die young. I still play and our band is the best I've ever been in, only these days, I'd prefer one nighters, and don't party till dawn as I used to.

I was late to FB, (I created an account about 2 yrs ago). It was nice to reconnect with friends from the past, some are musicians some are not

I don't like facebook, at all. If I weren't a musician, there's no way I'd have a facebook page.
I could write all day long on the damage I believe facebook does to the individual, and society as a whole. I understand it's benefits and believe there are a few, but I think those benefits are heavily outweighed by the negative effects facebook has on people's lives. I think most people are also unaware of it's negative effects, or in complete denial. How somebody can go on a family vacation, post 20 pictures a day of their experience while commenting and responding, without realizing the effect that's having on their experience is beyond me. And that's one of the lesser evils. But to each his/her own.
I think the thing that gets me most is when people take 1 single incident that may have happened, and blow it up into an all encompassing thing. Something that 25 years ago wouldn't have been in anyone's mind at all, not even a molecule in a grain of sand on all the beaches of the world - becomes the reality of "the way things are." Don't want to get political, but I have to laugh at all the make America great again stuff, and the other racial garbage that's flooded my FB page this last year. If I had time and ability, I'd love to create a mock FB page of a day (or week) back in the 70s. We've come a long LONG way since then. Things in the world, and the US aren't great, and there's room and need for lots of changes... but they're no where near how bad people are making them out to be, and nothing like they were decades ago. People only think everything is so horrible because it's what they're being fed, day in and day out, by the opinions of the people on FB and other social media... bla, bla, bla, and bla, bla, double bla... gotta go to work

[edit] I don't believe the above applies to all. I'm speaking of the people who get caught up in it, checking things regularly. I know many people who only visit a few times a week. I don't believe the above pertains to them.

So far, all 4 pages of this discussion explains why I stick with TalkBass and to h*ll with Facebook and the like.
uh, I thought this was about Bass -- amps - cabs - basses -- etc..?... not sure I understand venting about facebook on musical social media -- however, I gotta say, I get some good gigs and I stay up with some of the local bands using facebook so I got no gripe ... but now, about bass stuff...

I find it hard to get worked up about Facebook, either way. I've spent a bit of time tailoring my news feed, and blocking content I don't wish to see. This includes friends! I don't really sympathise with those passively complaining about what others post. Have an annoying cousin who won't shut up about their two kids and who writes using text speak? Block them! A lot of adults don't really have any Internet etiquette (on all sides of the political sphere) and I've found, purely anecdotally, that if I go on news pages on FB it tends to be older people arguing the toss over the big and small issues. Said people then probably flounce off Facebook, noisily renouncing it on Internet forums on the way.
The deal with Facebook is that it is free. You aren't so much the consumer as the product. The information that you voluntarily spread all over the place is harvested, though from all accounts it isn't used for anything especially interesting or prying. Heck, the Facebook app on smartphones listens into your conversations using the microphone in your phone. You have to approve giving it access to your camera and microphone. Test this by leaving your phone unlocked next to a radio broadcasting foreign-language speech. If you start seeing adverts in said foreign language then you know why! I personally think Facebook's role has yet to be fully realised. In some regards it is quite useful; warning me of inclement weather or allowing people to 'check in' with their families if they have been in the vicinity of a terror attack. On the other hand there is still an aggressive, bullying element and general level of annoyance that comes from basically handing everybody a megaphone.
As a rule of thumb I ignore and avoid anybody that sets their education record to "university of life", as they tend to have the biggest chips on their shoulders.

Love it or hate it, you can't argue with Facebook's financial success or popularity. The company just released its third quarter results: almost 2 billion individual monthly users. No other social or traditional media outlet even comes close.
Like everything else, Facebook has plusses and minuses. Generally, I'd say it's a net positive.

The idea that Facebook interactions constitute ''socializing'' for some is disturbing to me.

Similar rallying cries were made against radio, TV, and video games. And will be made against whatever comes next.
I could take your post and substitute "TV" for "Facebook" and it would sound just like my grandfather when I was a kid.

I was just astounded at how many of the Class of 1969 were still alive-- a few of us were prone to behavior that wasn't exactly safe on occasion, pleased to see so many old friends
