I don't much like facebook

I signed up for one of those programs that keeps you up to date on the happenings of your class. A few years back I got an email saying, "Hey, look at these fotos from this year's reunion."

I looked through the fotos, didn't recognize any of the middle aged folks and thought this couldn't possibly be my class...most everyone looked really old. Then I recognized a few friends.

Sad, sad, sad.

Maybe it was a "Bring Your Parents" reunion?
I've been through the same thing. I see names of past schoolmates that are familiar, but when I see their pics I dont remotely recognize them...

Political crap right now is the worst of FB.

Between that and baitclick Facebook is nearly unusable. All people do is complain about intimate details of their lives that Facebook friends should never know about. If you just read peoples' posts it would seem 90% of your friends are suicidal, and the other 10% have already committed Facebook suicide. They're the ones that post the cryptic garbage like, " F-it I quit" "bye" they a week later they post a pic of them smiling with a family member.
Yes, I get sick and tired of the constant back and forth bickering on which Gender Correct Bathroom a particular person should use or the "Attention Seeking Drama Queens" that share their "Special Bonding" Breastfeeding moment with millions of strangers...

LinkedIn is where you go to perfect the art of the humblebrag. There is a sickeningly tangible mateyness about LinkedIn, between the swarms of identikit students trying to bolster minimal skills with creative language or the burned-out professional whose employment history looks like a game of snakes 'n' ladders.

Either that or I feel an inferiority complex from seeing folk in my profession being way more enthusiastic about elements of the job than I am. Either way I go on there very occasionally and bat away requests from IT guys in India who want to sell me corporate database systems because I have 'SQL' as a skill and some uni professor endorsed me that one time...

Facebook is a bit the same. I've actually hidden friends who appear to be doing much better than I am. The guy that captains airliners for a living or the guy that moved to the US and took up sound engineering and now mixes live sound for festivals. The girl who got married and has a nice house (because she doesn't want to live in the city and splurge all her income renting a shitbox), or the couple who got the type of dog I've always wanted... the ultrasound scans, the roadtrip holidays, the gym selfies.... Facebook is designed to give you an inferiority complex. My own Facebook feed would probably give me a complex.

Opened an account on FB under a business name. Everything was wonderful for about a year, then one day I was locked out and I got a nasty gram telling me I needed to supply a photo ID that matched the name I had the account open under. I told them that while the business was still an active corporation, it was not being used at the time, and I only used it so I could use the email address to avoid having my personal email account spammed to death. Their reply was simply a copy of the original email. I'm no longer on FB.

I like it. I'm the guy in this meme:

First, not too familiar with how it all works.

Second, and this is the biggie, I accept friend requests or try and friend some of my old friends from back in the day (okay, way back in the day) and I don't recognize these quasi senior citizens! I mean they have the same name but they cannot possibly be my friends who were skinny and with hair last I saw them.

facebook just makes me sad.
Its just you who 's still young... c'mon..they probably says same about you, man. ;)

Mmm... I am a bass player first and foremost. And we here at TalkBass are bass players first and foremost. I have been on and off social media websites since the late 1990's. It does not matter to me about the platform very much. People that have loved my music over many years and have gotten to know me in real life do follow me at FB. But the best thing that I have done was to publish my own website back in 2005. Because social media websites come and go, have their positive and negative sides, and are always replaced with the next "latest and greatest" thing. This has shown me that the digital revolution will be ongoing for many years to come. Having and administrating my own web real estate has been the best experience for me, and the ability to post blogs at my website has been a real gift. Learning to navigate and administrate my FB profile has kept an undue amount of negativity out of my life. And it does not get in the way of who I really am, a bass player.

Because of facebook, I get to have many conversations with family in Australia, Scotland, Spain and all over the US, many of whom I used to go DECADES with no communication with. When people post commentary I don't like, I "unfollow" them, but let them remain "friends." And if they post HATE, I unfriend them, usually telling them why, unless they joined a militia or something.

I absolutely ADORE facebook, but I "get" what it is and how to use it.

It's not a news site.
